On Monday April 15th, we had the opportunity to discuss some of the most recent trends regarding commodity prices, as well as broader equity market and fixed income market performance. We talked about the upcoming earnings season, and how we believed upside/downside surprises would affect our portfolio. We were also able to listen into a pitch from the Energy Sector, where they did an incredible job at outlining some of the company's biggest competitive advantages, as well as their outlook on the market for liquefied natural gas. Fairfield Investment Group (FIG) The Fairfield Investment Group is an entirely student-led investment fund with $190,000 in assets under management (AUM). Our primary objective is to leverage our investment knowledge to generate returns that outperform the market while implementing risk management strategies to ensure proper diversification and avoid overconcentration. Structure and Operations The group is organized into various sectors, each led by a dedicated Portfolio Manager. Our activities include: ? Developing compelling investment pitches for both fixed income and equity asset classes. ? Creating concise one-pager summaries for stocks of interest when time does not permit a formal pitch. ? Conducting earnings report write-ups on our holdings. Our investment efforts are paramount, but FIG also emphasizes professional development by hosting several guest speaker events throughout the semester featuring professionals working within the finance industry. Additionally, we arrange in-person shadowing opportunities with investment firms. Mission and Culture While generating returns is a significant aspect of our work, the primary mission of FIG is to equip students with essential skills and knowledge about investing and financial markets. We aim to provide experiences that students can apply in their future careers. Yesterday, we had the opportunity to speak with Ben Laidler, the Global Markets Strategist at eToro. On Monday, we had the opportunity to discuss some of the most important topics affecting the markets we invest in, including energy prices & M&A activity. We were also able to listen into a pitch from the Financials Sector, where they explained not only the key aspects of their company's business model, but also their outlook on broader M&A/capital markets activity as well as where they see the wealth management industry going in the years to come. This past Tuesday, Fairfield Investment Group had the opportunity and privilege of visiting IEX’s headquarters in New York City. It was an incredible experience for us members as we learned more about the unique business model of IEX and how their company has created a more level playing field in the exchange industry.
