Tech Tip: Maximize Your Sensor’s Frequency Response The mounting accessory you choose plays a critical role in the achievable frequency response of your vibration sensor. Selecting the right accessory ensures accurate data collection and reliable insights. Here’s an example of why it matters: 📉 Curved surface magnets limit the frequency response to a maximum frequency response of ~120,000 CPM. 📈 Flat surface magnets, when paired with a high-quality sensor, can achieve an impressive maximum frequency response of up to 600,000 CPM. This is why CTC recommends having a variety of mounting accessories in your toolbox. They need a story." - Daniel Kahneman Nobel prize winner Professor Daniel Kahneman was considered the grandfather of behavioural economics and his groundbreaking research changed our understanding of human decision-making. But while his expertise focused on human judgment as it applied to economic decision making, many of his theories test out in our #ConditionMonitoring world. His line of thinking maps well to SDT Ultrasound Solutions "condition indicators". In the picture below, my SDT340 captures an RMS measurement from a bearing as it receives fresh shots of grease. RMS is the best indicator of friction. It guides me to understand the condition of the lubrication film separating bearing components. But there is much more to the story than just #friction. That's why my SDT340 provides peak readings that indicate the presence of impacts caused by bearing asperities. Peak and Friction are then compared and contrasted in a Crest Factor measurement that helps me understand how my bearing is evolving, and whether or not fresh grease made things better. Finally, to satisfy Mr. Kahneman's need for a story, I ask my SDT340 to pull a Time Waveform and a Spectrum. Now I have all the chapters of the story. Chapter 1 - The Friction (the crime). Chapter 2 - Impacting (the villain). Chapter 3 - Crest Factor (the clues). Chapter 4 - Time Waveform and Spectrum (the investigation). Chapter 5 - Fault Frequencies (the evidence). Chapter 6 - Lubrication (the decision, judgment, action, and conclusion). The SDT340 is the only ultrasound data collector that tells #reliability a story. Anything else is just a number. #HearMore
