Hello and welcome to Recovery Stories Have Power, my name is Oliver Books. Today, I’m talking with Danny O’Connor—a former U.S. Olympic boxing team member and world title contender. But his biggest fight wasn’t in the ring. Danny battled anxiety, substance use, and personal struggles that nearly took everything from him. Now, he’s using his experience to help others through DO Boxing Academy, a program that combines boxing, fitness, and mindfulness to support young people. You can follow Danny on Instagram @therealdannyoconnor and learn more about his program at doboxingacademy.com. This is a story about resilience, recovery, and finding purpose. In honor of Women's History Month, we celebrate Marty Mann (1904–1980), a trailblazer who reshaped society's understanding of alcoholism. As one of the first women to achieve long-term sobriety in Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), she dedicated her life to educating others that alcoholism is a public health issue, not a moral failing. In 1944, she founded the National Committee for Education on Alcoholism (now the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence), spreading the message that alcoholism is a disease, those affected are worth helping, and it is a public responsibility to do so. Reflecting on her own struggles, Mann once shared, "I wasn't mad or vicious—I was a sick person. I was suffering from an actual disease that had a name and symptoms like diabetes or cancer or TB." Her courage and advocacy have left an enduring legacy in the fight against addiction. Let's honor Marty Mann's contributions by continuing to support those affected by alcoholism and promoting understanding and compassion. ??
