While the invention of welding cannot be attributed to a single individual, significant developments in traditional welding emerged as early as 1800. The discovery of acetylene by Edmund Davy in 1836 laid the groundwork. However, the welding process as we recognize it today did not take shape until 1881. Auguste de Méritens pioneered the use of arc heat to join lead plates, and his Russian student, Nikolai Benardos, patented a method involving electric arc welding with carbon rods. Subsequent advancements included Nikolai Slavynov's utilization of metal electrodes and C.L. Coffin's discovery of an arc welding process using a coated metal electrode, a precursor to shielded metal arc welding. www.fabautollc.com

Machining is one of the oldest metalworking processes. Specifically Forging. The metal is heated in the forge, then hammered and bent into the desired shape. As forging or blacksmiths are a little different than welding, it's just all on the technique being used. Blacksmiths often employ traditional forge welding or arc welding to combine materials. When steel is intense yellow or nearly white, the metal is reaching welding heat or molten temperatures. The blacksmith may choose to use a hammer to forge smaller objects or an industrial power hammer for larger projects. Forged metals are incredibly strong, and are typically made of iron and steel. www.fabautollc.com

Welding has a long history that began in ancient times with forge welding, where metals were heated and hammered together. In the 19th century, the invention of electric arc welding and gas welding revolutionized the process. The early 20th century saw the development of resistance welding, gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW/TIG), and advancements in arc welding, which were crucial during the World Wars. In the mid-20th century, techniques like gas metal arc welding (GMAW/MIG) and submerged arc welding (SAW) became popular. The late 20th century introduced plasma arc welding (PAW), laser welding, and friction stir welding (FSW), providing greater precision and control. Modern welding includes robotic and advanced welding techniques like electron beam and ultrasonic welding, continually evolving to improve efficiency, precision, and safety across various industries. www.fabautollc.com
