This series is our way of introducing ourselves, and if you already know us (and many of you do), then this is an opportunity to reintroduce ourselves. So hi, hello, and welcome aboard.?

Hello friends, family, and colleagues – happy Friday to you! The first edition of The Leadership Diaries will be posted on Tues, Feb 4th. We wanted to provide another "sneak preview” from the chapter, so here we are. If you read the first preview, then you might recall how Rachel touched on her experiences as a bi-racial kid living in a mostly white neighborhood in Texas in the 1990s. At the time Rachel felt out of place in social situations, so eventually a part of her didn’t mind when she was left off the invite list; one less fraught interaction to navigate, she thought. She found that missing out on experiences didn't bother her provided she was missing out for the “right reasons” (ex: missing out on fun because she was working at a shoe store to pay for college). “As a mixed kid, I was already being left out. I was already missing out on social opportunities. So, when I got to college, giving things up to focus on/pay for school didn’t feel like a sacrifice.” This theme of sacrifice for the greater good will continue next week, in the full installment. We’ll also explore how growing up mixed race in a mostly white Texas neighborhood affected Rachel when she was just a little girl looking up to Mariah Carey, and longing to fit in:? ? “Mariah Carey was the only mixed-race person I could name at the time – and I loved her for that!” says Rachel with a chuckle. (For the record, she still loves Mariah Carey.) But it twisted her up inside to know that like Tigger, she was one-of-a-kind. A puzzle that other kids could never fully solve. A playmate who could only be partially understood.”?? ? Rachel ultimately made hay out of her predicament by becoming resilient, and by learning to fight for herself and others, as we endeavor to show you through her story.? ?
