Last Saturday's Startup Battle was intense! (If you're asking why I'm looking at my phone, it was because I was referring to their slides.) A million thanks to Alim Khamitov PhD for nominating me as one of the judges to allow me to add a mix of traditional finance and decentralised finance perspectives to the pitches. I saw a lot of brilliant ideas and true Central Asian talents that night, special mention to EZ FACTOR Limited, Partners Pay, Porte, and of course the winner QALA AI. As I was sharing with Alim even before the event, personally, the pitch deck that impressed me the most was QALA AI, because if Almaty had this technology when the city was built, then it would have been an even more beautiful city with less congestion and more potential for tourism to develop. They had solid technology with a solid team, and government contracts under their belt. Considering how fast the world is urbanising due to a growing population, such technologies infused with AI, would go a long way into ensuring smart and efficient city planning. As judges, we had a huge debate in the discussion room because of our own favourites, and it was a genuinely arduous task deciding the ultimate winner. Each of our favourite startups had huge profitability potential, scalability, and an extremely viable business plan. Eventually, we finally decided on QALA AI based on the long-term social-economic benefits that their technology could bring to populations of people living in different cities around the globe. As the judge who came up with this argument, I was "happily" volunteered by my fellow judges to explain the rationale behind our choice, and also to announce the winner ?? Overall it was a really eye-opening experience, and also special mention to Серик Акишев и Бизнес Номады for being such an entertaining and extremely trilingual host.
