  • ?#MappingMondays: Elemental Mapping of Multi-Metal 3D-Printed Structures We were thrilled to collaborate with Ohio State's Materials as Extremes (MATX), led by Calvin M. Stewart, PhD, to push the boundaries of multi-metal 3D printing analysis. Supporting research by Britton DeGarmo, the Exum team utilized our Massbox to map the elemental composition of a multi-metal tensile bar, 3D-printed with stainless steel 316L and Inconel 718. ?? Key Results: ??Elemental maps revealed high concentrations of Inconel’s key elements (Ni and Nb) on the left side of the sample, and steel elements (Fe and Cr) dominating the right. ??A high-resolution map with 25-micron resolution provided detailed insights into the transition zone where stainless steel and Inconel merged, critical for investigating migration of key elements. ??The transition zone's curved structure is typical of welded materials, and the curve's diameter matched expectations based on the printer's laser diameter. This collaboration highlights the power of high-resolution elemental mapping in advancing additive manufacturing, allowing researchers to pinpoint key elemental variations that could affect performance under extreme conditions. ?? Massbox makes it possible to visualize what’s hidden, creating new opportunities for innovation in materials science. #Massbox #ElementalMapping #3DPrinting #MaterialsScience #Inconel #ExumInstruments #AdditiveManufacturing

#MappingMondays: Defect Analysis in 3D-Printed Iron Disc ? In a recent demonstration for the University of Michigan-Dearborn, our Massbox (LALI-TOF-MS) provided unparalleled insights into the elemental distribution and depth variations within a 3D-printed iron disc. These maps offer a closer look at both large-scale elemental patterns and localized defect regions, revealing critical insights for materials development and quality control. ? ?? Congratulations to the University of Michigan-Dearborn for winning our "LIFT Materials Characterization Challenge"! A special thanks to LIFT for facilitating this valuable collaboration. ? ?? Key Findings:? Elemental Mapping: High-resolution maps displayed elemental variations across the iron disc (27 mm?x 9 mm microns) with a 100-micron spot size. ? Defect Analysis: A closer view of a defect region (2.3 mm x 2 mm, 25-micron spot size) highlighted the presence of Al, Fe, Ca, and Ti. Depth Profiling: The Massbox's depth profiling feature revealed how elements like Al and Fe vary across multiple layers of the defect. Edge vs. Center Mapping: Different element distributions were observed when comparing the disc's center and edge, critical for understanding structural integrity in additive manufacturing. ? ? Why This Matters: Improved defect identification and material characterization for additive manufacturing. Elemental data from both surface and depth for a complete analysis. Non-destructive analysis with no sample prep required. ? ?? Ready to transform your material analysis? Learn more about how Massbox reveals the unseen. ? #Massbox #ElementalMapping #DepthProfiling #AdditiveManufacturing #MaterialScience #3DPrinting #Innovation #ExumInstruments
