“Our whole town is destroyed…So how do you bounce back from that? And how long does that take? Who removes buildings that are rubble on private property?” These are all questions Gina, a survivor of Hurricane Helene, has about rebuilding her town. She’s not alone – as extreme weather increases, many communities face its devastating impacts and wonder how to bounce back. And in less affluent regions like Appalachia, bouncing back requires support from local, state, and federal government. The federal government’s decision to pull this support by firing thousands of employees who help protect communities from extreme weather leaves even more questions. What conversations are you hearing and having around how to support communities in this environment?

Last week’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy reminds us that it’s important to have a plan for extreme weather. As climate change increases the incidence of severe weather, it becomes increasingly important for our families, businesses, and governments to have a plan for when – not if – these disasters occur.
