In 2007, a group of parents in Chapel Hill, NC founded Extraordinary Ventures (EV). Their vision was to create a portfolio of self-sustaining small businesses designed around the skills and interests of their workforce. Today, EV operates 6 small businesses and successfully employs more than 55 individuals, many whom are now celebrating more than a decade with the organization. EV operates under the philosophy that all people deserve the opportunity to live meaningful and productive lives, to the fullest extent possible.

October is Disability Employment awareness month. I’ve appreciated the opportunity to share Extraordinary Ventures experiences with this often overlooked workforce. The unemployment rate for adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities is almost 80%. This is largely because of stigma. Just rethinking your approach to hiring can make a big difference to finding great employees who are loyal and productive workers. It’s good business and builds community.
