Last Friday our Executive Director, Talia Wright, spoke about the power of funder collaboratives at the Exponent Philanthropy Annual Conference. Pictured on the left here, she was joined by Julia Reticker-Flynn, of the Rights, Faith & Democracy Collaborative at Proteus Fund, and Dylan Hoos, an FSF executive committee member, of the Johnson Family Foundation. Thanks for spreading the word about how funder collaboratives can increase the impact of your grantmaking by sharing best practices and pooling funds.?

Thrilled to have had the opportunity to participate in Exponent Philanthropy’s annual conference last week in Austin, TX! Thank you to Exponent Philanthropy for inviting TPI to host an information session on a topic that Lisa Spalding, Senior Partner at TPI, has much expertise about: the value of bringing independent directors onto family foundation boards. We’re grateful for the engaging conversations and the chance to share insights on how family foundations can build stronger, more diverse boards to increase impact. TPI is here to support funders looking to take this step and strengthen their governance practices. #Philanthropy #FamilyFoundations #IndependentDirectors #Governance #2024ExponentConference #StrategicPhilanthropy #Funders #Donors #ImpactInvesting

Missed the #2024ExponentConference? Here's a great recap by our friend Rachel Kimber, MPA, MS:
Exponent Philanthropy conference covered a lot of ground in 3.5 days. Elisha Smith Arrillaga, Ph.D. of Center for Effective Philanthropy inspired us in her opening keynote about extraordinary giving in extraordinary times. It brought me back to Philanthropy Together's We Give Summit where we explored the many ways to GIVE: time, talent, treasure, testimony, ties. How are you answering the call to support our communities? I met Paul D. Daugherty, Rahsaan Harris, PhD, Kyra D. H. who helped steward conversations and welcome newcomers. These are field catalysts who are connecting dots and helping drive philanthropic strategy forward. Brian Schultz of Candid shared knowledge about the power of a single repository for demographic data and other data needs for strategic grantmaking investments and collaboration building. Susan Wagoner and Rachel DeMatteo, CPA of Your Part-Time Controller, LLC laid down some finance basics to facilitate communication between staff and board. Planfulness is attentiveness. Attentiveness is showing care ?? Katherine Liles of Blackbaud and the stellar advisement of Full Circle Impact Solutions brought you knowledge sharing about how Trust-Based Philanthropy Project ideals could apply to another set of #stakeholders in our #philanthropy / #nonprofit ecosystem: Technology Partners. #ai is coming at us fast ... #digital transformation was an emergent focus in 2020 when the #pandemic illustrated the painful outcomes of delay (data not in the cloud, distributed knowledge, silos, zoom licenses). We face a new set of challenges ... with lean staff and limited knowledge. Don't delay on upskilling! Learn how to collaborate effectively. Learn how to build a shared language. Lean into #trust.

This past week the Gifford staff ventured to Austin, TX for Exponent Philanthropy's Annual Conference. Designed specifically for and by lean funders (those with small staffs), Exponent gathers foundations to discuss and problem-solve around challenges and issues affecting the communities and causes they care about most.

We're back from a whirlwind few days at Exponent Philanthropy's Annual Conference and feeling energized by all the great conversations we were a part of! Some highlights: ?? Hearing powerful, real-life examples of how large unrestricted grants enabled investment in organizational strategy?and staff wellbeing to ultimately better serve the community from Joycelyn Jurado at St. David's Foundation and Sharon Vigil of Communities In Schools of Central Texas. ?? Eagerly anticipating Center for Effective Philanthropy's upcoming report on ?“The MacKenzie Scott Effect". ?? Attending a dine-around hosted by Patty McIlreavy of the Center for Disaster Philanthropy where we discussed how everyone could be a disaster philanthropist by helping communities and people in disaster-prone areas build back better – or build better. We're leaving with fresh perspectives and new connections, and looking forward to keeping the learning going.

Thank you Exponent Philanthropy for the opportunity to serve as the opening plenary speaker at last week's conference. I shared about the importance of 'Extraordinary Giving in Extraordinary Times.’ These times call for giving in courageous ways!
