It's World Diabetes Day! Why do podiatric physicians need to understand diabetes management and treatment? A proper foot exam is a crucial part of the treatment of diabetic patients. All patients with diabetes should have their feet checked at least once a year by a podiatric physician in order to detect problems early and to prevent ulcers and other complications. If their sugar is uncontrolled, diabetic patients are at risk of diabetic ulcers and possible amputation. Starting in podiatric medical school you learn how to use a glucometer and study the physiology and drugs behind treating diabetes.
