The Explaining Strategy applicative course is aimed at connecting the dots of the key concepts, theories, and frameworks that are placed at the foundation of the Strategy, providing an integrative view that allows us to separate the signal from the noise in understanding how Strategy should best be built and managed. Course website: https://explaining-strategy.com We are looking at all available thought processes that we can use to design and implement the Strategy, identifying their inputs & outputs, and understanding what is strictly necessary for an integrated system, and what is redundant, or doesn’t fit with the rest. This course is not only about explaning Strategy. It is also about testing how its concepts work in practice. For this reason, the course sessions are a balanced mix of showing and doing, including a teamwork exercise of designing Strategy’s and Strategic Plan’s models, enabled by a specialized team exercise web-based application. Each cohort team will select a case template, then work step by step for building the Strategy models applicable to their case. The team discussions are encouraged and separate virtual meeting rooms are provided during the Practice Sessions.

EXPLAINING STRATEGY WEEKEND MODULE For undergraduate students of business schools around the world, the Explaining Strategy course is now available as a Weekend Module (supplemental) available on Saturdays. The first program delivering this module is the 'Bachelor in Strategy and Business Transformation' program (LAET) at Tecnológico de Monterrey Business School (Mexico). https://lnkd.in/d97iKu3m We have adopted a combined course+practice format for the four main sessions. THE ADAPTIVE STRATEGY This webinar describes the concepts and methodology for turning Strategy into a dynamic and flexible adaptive construct. CONCEPTS The Strategy model is built on a set of inter-dependent components (future Trends, Weak Signals, and Inflection Points, Paramount Challenges, Strategic Choices and Value Propositions, Required Capabilities, etc.). The decisions that we make in defining these components, during Strategy's formulation process, are based on hypotheses (or assumptions) about the future. There is no other way, as we cannot be certain about what will happen in the future outside and inside our organization. We build similar models for the consecutive annual Strategic Plans required to implement our multi-annual Strategy. So we use two models: one for the Strategy, and one for the Strategic Plans. METHODOLOGY Based on the inter-dependency between Strategy & Strategic Plan model's components, we are able to define traceable chains of hypotheses that we must monitor for validation, along Strategy's execution (or implementation) timeline. Inevitably, some of these hypotheses will turn out in time to be invalid. How do we identify invalid hypotheses? Those related to external factors are monitored by the Early Warning System. Most of those are employed within the Strategic Analysis that identifies Trends, Weak Signals, Critical Uncertainties, and future Inflection Points. The others are identified through root-cause analysis, based on the periodic measurement in our scorecards. Once the invalid hypotheses are identified, we replace them within the respective model and modify or replace the components that depended on them. Then, the consequences of these changes are propagated downstream along the traceable chains of inter-related model components and associated hypotheses.
