For nearly two decades, the Multi-Institutional Study of Leadership (MSL) has been a global leader in measuring and improving youth development initiatives. But MSL doesn’t just measure progress—it provides a roadmap for improvement through evidence-based practices. ?? How Did We Get Here? MSL is built on Astin’s (1993) Input-Environment-Output (I-E-O) College Impact Model, which helps us understand how youth experiences before high school, college, or nonprofit programs shape their development. Originally grounded in the Social Change Model of Leadership Development (SCM; HERI, 1996)—which defines leadership as a purposeful, collaborative, values-based process that drives social change—MSL has evolved into a more comprehensive framework for human development. ?? Reflecting on a wonderful trip to Austin, Texas for SXSW EDU! I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to attend such an inspiring conference filled with powerful conversations, innovative ideas, and meaningful connections. One of the most special moments was reconnecting with friends and fellow changemakers—and also having the chance to reconnect with the 2022 National Teacher of the Year, Kurt Russell. His continued dedication to excellence in education is always inspiring and a reminder of the impact great educators have on generations to come. Thank you to the Center for Expanding Leadership & Opportunity team and The Allstate Foundation for their continued support in advancing youth advocacy and engagement. I’m leaving this experience re-energized and more committed than ever to making an impact as a nonprofit leader and future educator. This week, I’m reflecting on my time at #SXSWEDU. Thank you to The Allstate Foundation and the Center for Expanding Leadership & Opportunity (CELO) for providing such a transformative experience! The insights I gained were invaluable! A key takeaway was the power of integrating digital tools into learning to engage students more effectively. I also learned the significance of fostering inclusivity and equity to create more accessible and impactful learning environments. This experience strengthened my leadership skills and inspired me to continue driving change at Texas State University. Grateful for the opportunity to connect with innovators and grow as a leader!

This week, I had the incredible opportunity to attend SXSW EDU in Austin, Texas, as part of the Changemakers cohort. I’m beyond grateful for this experience and the chance to learn from thought leaders, innovators, and fellow changemakers dedicated to shaping the future of education, technology, and social impact. A special thank you to The Allstate Foundation, Allstate & Center for Expanding Leadership & Opportunity for making this possible! Some of my highlights included: ?? Keynote: Rewriting How We Learn – The Power of an Experimental Mindset with Anne-Laure Le Cunff, exploring how small, intentional experiments can lead to transformational change in learning and personal development. ?? Mental Health + Money + AI Panel, where I engaged with experts like Mariel Baisley, Steven Hughes, Jessica Patel, and April Rubin on financial well-being, AI-driven accessibility, and how technology can support marginalized communities. ?? Free Speech in a Polarized World, a session led by Nayeli Vivanco, which provided invaluable insights on fostering open, productive dialogue on controversial topics—a discussion especially relevant in today’s climate. Another standout moment was connecting with Farm-NG and learning about their AI-powered agricultural technology aimed at tackling food insecurity. Given my work on the Food, Farm & Nutrition Task Force in the New York State Capitol, it was inspiring to see how innovation can intersect with policy to create meaningful change. Beyond the sessions, I was energized by the incredible people I reconnected with—fellow leaders, educators, and visionaries who are all working to drive positive impact. This experience reaffirmed my passion for youth-driven solutions and my commitment to bringing these insights back to my community. Excited to keep the conversation going and apply these lessons moving forward!
