National Registry of Exonerations

Alan Butts was exonerated of murder in Franklin, Ohio, earlier this year. He is the most recent exoneree in the Registry who was convicted based on evidence of?#shakenbabysyndrome?(SBS). Today, the Registry has 34 exonerations in its database where the convictions were based on Shaken Baby Syndrome. A new research report from the NRE is being published today, documenting 151 exoneration cases where medicolegal death investigation played a role in the underlying #wrongfulconviction. Today is Juneteenth - a holiday largely regarded as?Black Americans’ true Independence Day. In 2022, we released our groundbreaking report, "Race and Wrongful Convictions," which revealed that?Black people are 13.6% of the American population but 53% of the 3,200 exonerations?listed in our database at the time of publication. In other words, based on this data, innocent?Black Americans were seven times more likely than white Americans to be falsely?convicted of serious crimes. The Registry joins in commemorating this important date with celebration, while remaining committed to reporting on the disproportionate harm our criminal legal system continues to inflict on the Black community.

Since 1989, 732 cases and 1,391 forensic examinations resulted in exonerations for the defendants involved. Why did just 16 of those cases (2%) involve digital evidence?
