关于我们
The National Registry of Exonerations is a nonprofit research project of the Newkirk Center for Science & Society at University of California Irvine, the University of Michigan Law School and Michigan State University College of Law. It was founded in 2012 in conjunction with the Center on Wrongful Convictions at Northwestern University School of Law. The Registry provides detailed information about every known exoneration in the United States since 1989—cases in which a person was wrongly convicted of a crime and later cleared of all the charges based on new evidence of innocence. The Registry also maintains a more limited database of known exonerations prior to 1989.

Today is Juneteenth - a holiday largely regarded as?Black Americans’ true Independence Day. In 2022, we released our groundbreaking report, "Race and Wrongful Convictions," which revealed that?Black people are 13.6% of the American population but 53% of the 3,200 exonerations?listed in our database at the time of publication. In other words, based on this data, innocent?Black Americans were seven times more likely than white Americans to be falsely?convicted of serious crimes. The Registry joins in commemorating this important date with celebration, while remaining committed to reporting on the disproportionate harm our criminal legal system continues to inflict on the Black community.

Thank you to audiochuck and the Crime Junkie podcast for speaking about the importance of the National Registry of Exonerations in today's episode, which covers the wrongful conviction of 12-year-old Anthony Harris for the murder of 5-year-old Devan Duniver. We are so grateful for the many ways in which audiochuck uses its platform for good. The National Registry of Exonerations is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides the foundation for the innocence movement.
