Accomplished Public Company CEO, Board Chair, Director, PE Advisor, C-Suite Mentor and Speaker. 2022 NACD Directorship 100
Was honored to be invited to speak at The Wharton School and SHRM’s CEO Academy. Here are some key takeaways from my session on CEO / Board dynamics: 1. The best CEOs view their board as a trusted set of advisors rather than just governance oversight. 2. Building trusted board/CEO relationships largely happen outside of the boardroom. 3. Time spent in the boardroom is precious and short. Focus on dialog over presentations. Don’t save all the challenging conversations for the last hour of the meeting in executive session. 4. Ask your board to playback your key messages. If they can’t articulate them, it’s unlikely that they’ll land with investors. 5. Expose the board to the management team and high performers at the next level down in both formal and informal settings. 6. The “breakfast chat” where the CEO shares his/her perspectives with the board before the management team joins the board meeting is incredibly helpful and sets the stage for a productive use of everyone’s time. 7. Think like an activist. Directors asking challenging questions and probing areas of vulnerability make the company stronger. #CEO #boardofdirectors The ExCo Group Edison Partners
