A voice and a home for all military surgeons and civilian partners within the American College of Surgeons
关于我们
Medicine is constantly changing, particularly military medicine. As the Military Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, the Excelsior Surgical Society provides a voice and a home for all military surgeons and our civilian partners within the largest surgical organization in the world. The Excelsior Surgical Society serves as both an on-ramp to membership in the College as well as an off-ramp for surgeons as they separate from the military and transition to civilian practice. Additionally, in today’s evolving environment, the Military-Civilian Partnership is now as important as ever.

What an incredible honor to testify before the Senate Armed Services Committee (https://lnkd.in/ebKqaa9b) with senior leaders Douglas Robb, DO, MPH and Paul Friedrichs on the urgent need to shore up military medical readiness with combat casualty care at its core. Our recent track record of medical supremacy on the battlefield demonstrates that we know what "right" looks like. But we are actively falling into the "peacetime effect" trap. We must fully resource and support our top-tier military treatment facilities as hubs for trauma and burn readiness and force generation. Collaborating with civilian partners is key to bring trauma and burn training up to scale, to ensure bi-directional exchange of best practices, and to provide priceless mentorship for our military trauma team members from all disciplines including advanced practice and allied health. By prioritizing combat casualty research, our innovation engine will keep us ahead of pacing medical threats. All of these efforts should align in a whole of society effort to re-vitalize the atrophied NDMS into a robust National Trauma and Emergency Preparedness System. Re-commiting ourselves to “ever upward” in the care of combat casualties at the 80/10 Anniversary of the Excelsior Surgical Society in Rome ????
Combat physician, transplant surgeon, EVP for Medical Affairs and Dean of the School of Medicine at Uniformed Services University
It was my great honor and privilege to address the members of the modern Excelsior Surgical Society at our ten-year reunion in Rome, where the original Excelsior Society was founded. In 1945, a group of battle-hardened military surgeons gathered at the Excelsior Hotel in Rome. Their mission was more than a reunion; it was a commitment to ensuring that the hard-won lessons of war would not be lost but would instead lead to the advancement of surgical science. This group formed a society - named after the original meeting place - dedicated to preserving and improving military medicine. That mission continued until the death of the legendary Dr. Michael DeBakey, the last of the original members. A decade ago, recognizing the urgent need for a professional home for military surgeons, we revived the Excelsior Surgical Society. Our goal was to build upon the foundation laid 80 years ago—connecting generations of military surgeons, fostering mentorship, advancing surgical knowledge, and strengthening the vital bridge between military and civilian medicine. Excelsior means “ever upward.” Let us continue to honor that name, striving for excellence, pushing boundaries, and ensuring that those who serve receive the very best care possible. COL Danielle Holt, MD, MSS, FACS, CAPT Matthew Bradley

WOULD LOVE TO SEE MORE OF THESE WIN-WIN EFFORTS Kudos to those in the Colorado Springs MHS and VA systems for collaborating and improving readiness opportunities while expanding patient care options. These types of programs, along with MIL-CIV partnerships, will ensure that medical teams going downrange can sustain currency in their specialties. What needs to happen to create conditions where these collaborations are more widespread nationwide? Thoughts?...
