Today, Sweden's leading business newspaper Dagens Industri published an Op-Ed article by our Founder and CEO Mattias ?str?m arguing for the importance of digital sovereignty in Europe in today's volatile geopolitical climate. In our increasingly digital world, non-European companies (mainly American) control 87% of Europe's critical cloud and AI infrastructure. Wouldn't we be concerned if 87% of our airports, harbors, bridges, tunnels and roads were under foreign control with extraterritorial legislation? In the case of US clouds, American authorities have various backdoors to get access to the data held on servers located in Europe if these are owned by American corporations. These legal frameworks include the CLOUD Act and Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. Cloud penetration in the US stands at 78% versus only 41% in the European Union. And this contributes to the growing productivity gap we see between Europe and the US in a similar way to if Europe had only had half of the mobile or internet penetration versus the US. Who knows what the Trump 2.0 presidency might bring? Incoming Vice President JD Vance recently said that if Europe seeks to regulate any of Elon Musk's platforms, the US might withdraw support for NATO. In such an environment, are we happy with American clouds controlling more than 80% of the European market? The US administration could turn off the tap or pressure us in various ways. At evroc, we are building Europe's first sovereign hyperscale cloud so that our continent can benefit fully from critical cloud and AI infrastructure. That way, we can help to close the productivity gap between Europe and the US.

Tuesday's election in the US brings a critical question to light. To what degree is Europe dependent on critical infrastructure and security guarantees from the US? Now, more than ever, it is crucial for Europe to critically evaluate its reliance on foreign infrastructure, particularly in the digital realm. With foreign cloud providers controlling 87% of the European cloud market and hence, European data, now is the right time to ask if this is something we should be comfortable with. ? Being dependent on foreign clouds, at a time when digital infrastructure is critical for the functioning of our societies, by extension means that we are dependent on foreign leaders who could make unpredictable changes on a whim. This, combined with the added risk of a trade war, is a scenario that could put European companies and organizations hosting their data on foreign clouds at great risk. ? At evroc, we emphasize the importance of returning data sovereignty to Europe, ensuring our continent's data remains under the control of the users themselves, protected?by European legislation, enforced by European courts.? ? Let us seize this moment to strengthen Europe’s digital infrastructure, ensuring it aligns with our values and legislative frameworks. ? Let this be a wakeup call and a first critical step for all European government officials and CTOs towards securing our digital and economic future.

It’s 1983, and you just got home from elementary school. What do you do? Read Superman? Nah. You press the on button on your clunky computer, listen to the buzz of electronics come alive, and dive into coding your own game, of course. Talking with Mattias ?str?m, founder and CEO of evroc, about his journey into tech was nothing short of inspiring. How often do you hear a “from coding a game in our garage to building a next-gen hyperscale cloud” story? Just as well-coded games matter to gamers, Europe needs a solution to its surging data demands - an industry on track to rival the carbon footprint of airlines. With Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and IBM holding over 75% of our regional cloud market, where is Europe’s own safe-keeper? Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s Evroc! Norrsken VC portfolio company Evroc is stepping up to the challenge with a bold vision: to reshape Europe’s digital future. Using state-of-the-art, energy-efficient tech and AI, Evroc is building Europe’s first secure, sovereign, and sustainable hyperscale cloud whilst redefining the data centers running it. It’s fair to say that the Evroc team are even reaching beyond the clouds. Earlier this year, they were selected as a 2024 Technology Pioneer by the World Economic Forum, joining the ranks of the world’s most promising startups and scale-ups in the WEF Innovator Communities. The coding journey has surely come a long way since ‘83, however, we’d still love to try that game, Mattias! Keep an eye out as they set the standard for the world’s cleanest cloud - soon in a sky near you.?
