Chris Nihan - President of EVready Energy, understands NEVI funding as well as anyone. Read his take on the fed’s decision to pull back that funding.
Within minutes of this announcement, I had about 10 texts. What do you think of this? Is this a big deal? My personal opinion: This funding was an industry distraction. In fact, it may have hurt it overall. For most, it was a desert mirage. But why? Within the charging space I have personally been a part of about $50-million in funding wins in the last decade or so. The most difficult funding that took the longest to win was state & federal funding. It had more red tape, slowed investment, and in some cases the stations would have been installed anyways. Generally, the way the government designed EV charging programs, small businesses couldn't win. The requirement would be for one company to hit 12 very prescribed pins on a map in an RFP. In many cases, an applicant can't just apply for their site, they have to figure out how to coordinate with 11 other partners on random corners of the map. It was a full-time job to coordinate. Sometimes, there were qualifications around the companies that could or could not respond. The requirements for the site were strict, and related to EV charging technology, already out of date in 2024. Sometimes a scoring weight would be placed on cost-share, where Tesla would always have a dramatic competitive advantage. This isn't Tesla's fault, they just have a major competitive advantage that they earned over time the hard way. This was in some ways, an accidental subsidy program for Tesla, or some of the country's wealthiest companies. In reviewing how media outlets are reporting on this, it is difficult to even follow exactly what is happening if you aren't in the industry. Some articles make it sound like state funding is being suspended, while others make it sound like it is federal funding. NEVI funding was federal funding, which was provided to and administered by states. Where everyone should focus to find support in installing EV chargers: #1: Electric utilities are benefitting from EV's in their territories with, give or take, $400 profit per vehicle sold through electric delivery and supply (yes, utilities out there, I am over-simplifying). Electric utilities are not run by the federal government and can work with regulatory commissions to release funding. Utilities across the country have LIVE funding today. It is easier and faster to win. Anyone can easily participate. #2: States can still release their own funding, not provided by the federal government. In 2016 when Trump was elected, states rebelled like a good old-fashioned teenager to their parents, figuring out ways to release funding on the state level. My message to everyone - Losing federal funding does not materially impact the EV charging industry. Have you seen the new GMC Sierra EV? Technology and utiiity programs will move us forward from here. Enjoy your weekend, nothing to see. EVready? Energy

Check out this interview with Greg Balasco, owner of Lakeland Automall Ford & Hyundai, and Chris Nihan of EVready Energy, discussing the implementation of EV charging infrastructure at Greg's dealerships. Greg recounts his journey from knowing next to nothing about EV charging and all of its complexities to fully embracing it across his 38-acre, multi-franchise property. He credits Chris for providing crucial guidance and support throughout the process, initially while Chris was with ChargePoint and later when Chris started EVready Energy. Greg explains his strategy for standardizing on ChargePoint equipment across all locations, emphasizing the importance of consistency for both employees and customers. Throughout the conversation, Greg underscores the learning curve involved in adopting EV technology and the value of having a knowledgeable partner like EVready to navigate the complexities of the emerging EV charging landscape. I get the same questions from family, friends, and customers every day. Why Elon and Trump? Does Trump's "anti-EV" agenda affect your company or industry? Does this mean the automotive manufacturers are moving away from EV (They and dealerships are largely our customers)? 1. Tesla has major manufacturing cost competitive advantages. For Elon, he doesn't need incentives anymore to drive cost-competitiveness. And with his technology, it is certainly a unique solution that will help maintain market share while he bridges the autonomy and artificial intelligence gap to further his moat, eventually likely licensing out the technology to other OEM's (and the valuation continues to skyrocket). In general, this gives automotive manufacturers and dealers more time to catch up from a cost perspective and ultimately sell what is more profitable today. For the American People, this de-politicizes EV's (my favorite part) and provides consumer choice. 2. Ultimately, people will move to EV's like they chose smart phones over flip phones and Blackberry's (Remember when the general consensus in 2008 was that you needed a physical keyboard). Additionally, artificial intelligence and technology in general needs electric. This isn't just about cars. This is where we are going. Does infrastructure need to catch up? In some applications and areas, of course. Just a matter of time. 3. Can the grid handle this? The news channels like to give a blanket "yes" and "no". But the answer isn't that simple. EV's allow for a long-term decentralized grid that allows service operators flexibility to become more resilient, economic, and sustainable. Is this always advertised on TV? Absolutely not. 4. Back when Trump was first elected, the EV industry was nervous about what it meant. In regions where EV's are more difficult or impacted the locally economy, it certainly slowed the pace of growth. But in the states where the technology was already winning, where utilities realized the economic gain of $400 per EV sold in their region, where policy backed moving towards electrification, it almost caused a revolt responding to federal standards, where local government and electric utilities rallied around the prioritization of electrification. I am not saying I agree or disagree, that is just what happened. 5. The reality is, EVready? Energy was founded for end users to solve the biggest problems around electrification, not force it. The technology will win out. The world needs to adopt it to remain competitive. Organically, we will make the North American electric grid more sustainable, resilient, and economic while providing safer, more convenient, higher quality driving experiences, in the right places, at the right times, led by consumer choice. Not to mention other industries need to do the same. I was on Car Dealership Guy Podcast in August, very much relating to this topic, if it is of interest.
