An internship at Evonik opened new doors for Ilona, a mechanical engineering student from INSA Lyon, thriving beyond her usual field. ??Ilona Gourmain ?? Intern in Application Technology ?? How has your impression of Evonik evolved since starting your internship? I am studying mechanical engineering and Evonik, as a company renown in the chemistry field, was not the first company I would have thought of for an internship. However, working on Rohacryl, a foam developed by Evonik, has allowed me to enhance my degree with competencies in related fields. Being outside my primary area of study, I am continuously learning about material science, equipment, testing methods, while gaining autonomy, adaptability and efficiency in the process. I am part of the business unit, and this also gives me a deeper understanding of the applications the material I am working on can have on some markets. ?? Can you describe a typical day in your internship, balancing lab work and computations? ?? A typical day starts by making the composites in the morning, while acquiring data on the process. This involves manual tasks such as cutting, measuring, and observing. In the afternoon, depending on the schedule, I may conduct lab tests on the composites produced or analyze the data collected. Through this, I can understand the material’s mechanical behavior and determine how to improve its performance. ?? How has your internship shaped your career goals? ?? I really enjoy the balance of having lab work and more “brain work” continuously alternating. It is very stimulating, and rewarding to have an overview of the product, from its manufacturing to optimizing its performance. This diversity of tasks and balance between development/application is something I want to look for in my career. I would encourage students to remain open-minded and curious about opportunities, even those outside their primary field of study. We are excited to announce the inauguration of the new Applied Innovation, Care Solutions Lab held on 19th November at Evonik India Research Hub! This state-of-the-art facility is a significant step towards our commitment to fostering innovation and strengthening customer collaboration in Personal Care and Cleaning solutions. The inauguration event began with a ribbon cutting and lamp lighting ceremony at the Care Solutions Lab, followed by insightful addresses from our esteemed leaders, Dr. Ute Schick, SVP and Head, Care Solutions, Mr. Vinod Paremal, President and Managing Director, India Region and Ms. Divya Agrawal, Business Director, Care Solutions, India. The insight exchange session led by Sounak Biswas, Head of Cleaning Solutions, APWC, Care Solutions with Evonik Leadership provided valuable insights into the future of Care Solutions followed by a lab tour along with our partners. Our new lab is dedicated to driving sustainable innovation. It will focus on developing solutions for skin care, hair care & cleansing to the Indian region and cleaning products tailored to the Asia Pacific without China. The lab will also work closely with the Evonik Skin Institute to substantiate claims with rigorous in-vitro and in-vivo studies. Green chemistry labs will complete the setup for sustainable innovation. We extend our gratitude to everyone who made this event a success, especially to our guests, and partners.
