A coalition of women's rights activists working to end violence against women & girls through global binding policy
关于我们
Every Woman Treaty is a global coalition of more than 4,000 women's rights organizations and activists in 169 nations advancing a treaty to end violence against women and girls in the form of a new Optional Protocol to CEDAW. A new Optional Protocol to CEDAW will codify norms and standards into binding obligations, leading to stronger laws and policies at the State level in countries around the world. In December 2023, our work led to the release of a joint statement on the need for a new Optional Protocol by four nations—the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Costa Rica, Sierra Leone, and Antigua and Barbuda—and a joint statement by the current and former Special Rapporteurs on violence against women and girls calling for a new Optional Protocol to CEDAW dedicated to ending violence against women and girls. To date, 16 nations showing regional diversity have expressed interest in exploring the possibility of a new binding mechanism. Momentum Grows for New CEDAW Optional Protocol to End Violence Against Women and Girls! We're pleased to share that during our side event at the 69th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women,?an African country joined?16 other nations?in exploring a new Optional Protocol to CEDAW?aimed at ending violence against women and girls—marking an important step toward stronger global protections. Amid a world in which?1 in 4 nations?has reported a rollback in women’s rights, women and girls are facing higher levels of discrimination and weaker legal protections, it is reaffirming to have nations stand with women and girls and commit to supporting a mechanism that can further women’s rights and accelerate gender equality. The?United Nations Special Rapporteur on violence against women and girls, its causes and consequences (SRVAWG) Ms. Reem Alsalem?and two former SRVAW Prof. Rashida Manjoo and Dr. Dubravka ?imonovi? spoke at our side event. Click the link to learn more: https://lnkd.in/gyb_7hg5 Special thanks to the Core Group of Friends for a New Optional Protocol to CEDAW and The Carter Center for cohosting this event and to the SRVAWG Ms. Reem Alsalem (Reem Alsalem) and two former SRVAW Prof. Rashida Manjoo and Dr. Dubravka ?imonovi? for their time and expertise. #CSW69 #CSW #CSW2025 #GenderEquality #EndVAWG #ForAllWomenAndGirls #everywomantreaty

It is always a pleasure to hear the indomitable Dr. Eleanor Nwadinobi speak! We had the pleasure of witnessing her presentation today on widows and the need for a new Optional Protocol to CEDAW to end violence against women and girls and further widows' rights in nations around the world at a side event hosted by Widows Rights International and the National Human Rights Commission of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Dr. Nwadinobi is the founder of the nonprofit WIDO and a cofounder of Every Woman Treaty. She reminds the world that widows can be a woman or girl of any age - an older woman whose husband has died or a girl forced into a child marriage and then later abandoned. All widows need compassion and legal protection from violence and abuse. Thank you, Dr. Nwadinobi, for your relentless commitment to gender equality and women's rights! #CSW69 #genderequality #WidowsRights #everywomantreaty WiDO Widows Development Organization Dr Eleanor Nwadinobi

It was such an honor for Every Woman Treaty to cohost the CSW69 parallel event “WOMEN AND HEALTH: Beijing+30 – Achievements, Gaps, Challenges, Solutions.” Too often, conversations about violence against women and girls do not include a full discussion of the health consequences violence has on women’s and girls' lives – and that violence can take place at healthcare facilities. Thank you Medical Women’s International Association, Soroptimist International, International Health Awareness Network, and American Medical Women’s Association for inviting us to be part of this crucial discussion. A new Optional Protocol to CEDAW to end violence against women and girls can work to aid women's health around the world in multiple ways: - Work to hold systems accountable for preventing harm in the first place. - Help ensure that survivors receive comprehensive medical and psychosocial care - Work to break down the unequal gender power that leads to violence, including violence in the healthcare - Lead to a safer world. Women’s health, in many ways, begins with their safety. A new Optional Protocol is a starting point, a gateway to better and stronger health for women, girls, families and communities, and nations, indeed the whole world. As we mark Beijing+30, we stand at a pivotal moment. We must move beyond commitments to concrete action—because violence has no place in healthcare, just as it has no place in any aspect of women’s lives. #CSW69 #CSW #EndVAWG #genderequality #womenshealth Dr Eleanor Nwadinobi Soroptimist International HQ

Ms. Evelyn Dürmayer, Chair of NGO CSW Vienna, Calls for Optional Protocol to CEDAW at CSW69. During the 69th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women, the Chair of NGO CSW Vienna, Ms. Evelyn Dürmayer, used her time at the NGO Briefing at the United Nations to support the call for a new Optional Protocol to CEDAW to end violence against women and girls. “This is a very crucial moment in the history of the women's movement and the CEDAW to consider this new Optional Protocol,” she said. “Until we resolve this issue, we will not have peace in the world.” Along with those currently supportive of the effort — 17 nations, the African Union, thousands of women's rights activists and organizations and the former and current Special Rapporteurs on violence against women and girls — she called on NGOs across the globe to join the call. “It should also be our initiative as NGOs worldwide to be part of this movement to create a new Optional Protocol to CEDAW because this would include women who are not part of a regional convention and this is very crucial,” she said. Thank you Ms. Dürmayer for your support and for your ongoing work for women and girls around the world. #CSW69 #CSW #NGOCSW #INGOs #everywomantreaty #EndVAWG #GenderEquality #ForAllWomenandGirls https://lnkd.in/geneURG9

CSW69 – A first week full of exchanges and engagements! This first week of the 69th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69) in New York was marked by inspiring meetings and high-level discussions on gender equality and the fight against violence against women and girls. Every Woman Treaty had the honor of attending strategic sessions and speaking with African First Ladies, Ministers in charge of gender and women's rights, as well as many actors committed to advancing women's rights internationally. These exchanges strengthen our resolve to advocate for stronger legal mechanisms, including through a new Optional Protocol to CEDAW to end violence against women and girls. This week looks just as promising, with highlights to come. Let's stay mobilized to advance women's rights and strengthen international protection against gender-based violence! Let's continue the dialogue and the action! #CSW69 #CEDAW #EndVAWG #humanrights #everywomantreaty #womenrights #EndVAWG

Every Woman Treaty, The Carter Center and Soroptimist International HQ hosted a high-level parallel event on the need for a new Optional Protocol to CEDAW to end violence against women and girls at the 69th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women. ? The conversation was an opportunity to engage more women’s rights activists and organizations on the need for a binding instrument specific to addressing this widespread human rights violation. Former UN Special Rapporteurs on violence against women Prof Rashida Manjoo and Dr. Dubravka ?imonovi? detailed how the global framework on violence against women and girls has become stronger over the last few decades, but that a new Optional Protocol to CEDAW is necessary to put ending violence against women and girls within a binding, hard law treaty framework. Amid the news that one in four countries experienced a backlash on women’s rights in 2024, women’s rights activists must come together to ensure women’s human rights are protected and every woman and girl can exercise her right to a life free from violence. We are grateful for the time and expertise of Prof. Manjoo and Dr. ?imonovi? and to The Carter Center and Soroptimist International HQ for their ongoing partnership and commitment to women’s rights. #CSW69 #CSW #GenderEquality #ForAllWomenAndGirls #EndVAWG Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gZWeiUER
