A coalition of women's rights activists working to end violence against women & girls through global binding policy
关于我们
Every Woman Treaty is a global coalition of more than 4,000 women's rights organizations and activists in 169 nations advancing a treaty to end violence against women and girls in the form of a new Optional Protocol to CEDAW. A new Optional Protocol to CEDAW will codify norms and standards into binding obligations, leading to stronger laws and policies at the State level in countries around the world. In December 2023, our work led to the release of a joint statement on the need for a new Optional Protocol by four nations—the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Costa Rica, Sierra Leone, and Antigua and Barbuda—and a joint statement by the current and former Special Rapporteurs on violence against women and girls calling for a new Optional Protocol to CEDAW dedicated to ending violence against women and girls. To date, 16 nations showing regional diversity have expressed interest in exploring the possibility of a new binding mechanism. CSW69 – A first week full of exchanges and engagements! This first week of the 69th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69) in New York was marked by inspiring meetings and high-level discussions on gender equality and the fight against violence against women and girls. Every Woman Treaty had the honor of attending strategic sessions and speaking with African First Ladies, Ministers in charge of gender and women's rights, as well as many actors committed to advancing women's rights internationally. These exchanges strengthen our resolve to advocate for stronger legal mechanisms, including through a new Optional Protocol to CEDAW to end violence against women and girls. This week looks just as promising, with highlights to come. Let's stay mobilized to advance women's rights and strengthen international protection against gender-based violence! Let's continue the dialogue and the action! #CSW69 #CEDAW #EndVAWG #humanrights #everywomantreaty #womenrights #EndVAWG

Every Woman Treaty, The Carter Center and Soroptimist International hosted a high-level parallel event on the need for a new Optional Protocol to CEDAW to end violence against women and girls at the 69th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women. ? The conversation was an opportunity to engage more women’s rights activists and organizations on the need for a binding instrument specific to addressing this widespread human rights violation. Former UN Special Rapporteurs on violence against women Prof Rashida Manjoo and Dr. Dubravka ?imonovi? detailed how the global framework on violence against women and girls has become stronger over the last few decades, but that a new Optional Protocol to CEDAW is necessary to put ending violence against women and girls within a binding, hard law treaty framework. Amid the news that one in four countries experienced a backlash on women’s rights in 2024, women’s rights activists must come together to ensure women’s human rights are protected and every woman and girl can exercise her right to a life free from violence. We are grateful for the time and expertise of Prof. Manjoo and Dr. ?imonovi? and to The Carter Center and Soroptimist International HQ for their ongoing partnership and commitment to women’s rights. #CSW69 #CSW #GenderEquality #ForAllWomenAndGirls #EndVAWG Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gZWeiUER

#IWD Highlight In Kajiado, Kenya, Every Woman Fellow Saraphina Anjia led vital discussions with 200 students on breaking gender barriers, ensuring menstrual health is normalized, not stigmatized, and how a new Optional Protocol to CEDAW can work to lower rates of violence against women and girls. The key message? You have the power to accelerate change. This was not just about awareness; it was about equipping young minds to challenge stereotypes and systems and advocate for a more inclusive world. The conversations encouraged students to embrace equality, normalize menstrual health, and advocate for a future that is inclusive and free from violence - real change happens when everyone is part of the conversation!? Much appreciation to SHIKISHA PAD CHANGEMAKERS Foundation for the invitation! #IWD2025 #AccelerateAction #EveryWomanTreaty
