Case Study: National Apprenticeship Week 2025 – Daniel Nowak Everyone Active - SLM Wythenshawe Forum From Apprentice to General Manager: Dan Nowak’s Journey Dan Nowak’s career is a testament to the power of apprenticeships in shaping successful careers. His journey began in 2010 when he joined Wythenshawe Forum as one of its first apprentices, training as a lifeguard. This opportunity provided him with hands-on experience, industry qualifications, and the foundation for a long-term career in leisure management. By 2012, Dan secured a full-time lifeguard position. While working, he earned his Gym Level 2 and Personal Trainer Level 3 qualifications, which helped him progress to a step-up Duty Manager role. In 2019, Dan left Wythenshawe Forum to expand his managerial experience in the industry. Three years later, in 2022, he returned—this time as Operations Manager. His commitment to professional growth continued, and he is now completing his Operations Level 5 standard. Recently, Dan has been seconded to a General Manager position at Wythenshawe Forum, a reflection of his expertise, leadership, and the strong foundation built through his apprenticeship journey. Reflecting on his experience, Dan says: “When I decided not to go to university, apprenticeships allowed me to gain qualifications and skills whilst in the workplace, which allowed me to provide a better future for myself and my family.” Dan’s story is an inspiring example of how apprenticeships can create real career progression, equipping individuals with the skills and confidence needed to excel. His journey highlights the impact of workplace learning, showing that with dedication and the right opportunities, apprenticeships can lead to senior leadership roles. #NAW2025 Lifetime Richard Rees Kim Bames David Greenwood

Triplegic solicitor completes 10km swim challenge and launches new accessibility technology at London Aquatics Centre. For the first time in the site’s history, the diving pool is now accessible via a Poolpod, further expanding inclusive swimming opportunities. The new Poolpod 3.0, is a submersible platform lift designed to improve pool access for people with limited mobility. The installation marks a significant milestone for accessibility at the venue, at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Justen Bersin-Taylor, a solicitor who lost full use of three limbs following a road collision became the first person to utilise the new technology at the London Aquatics Centre. This coincided with Justen’s personal challenge, in which he completed an amazing 10km swim. Justen, a keen adventure sports enthusiast, finished the final leg of his month-long swimming challenge on Thursday 30 January, raising more than £2,500 for the charity Access Adventures. Reflecting on his achievement, he said: "It seems like a pretty simple feat until you realise I only have one fully functioning limb to pull the rest of me through the water. Speaking about the Poolpod, Justen said: “The Poolpod 3.0 is a great device that makes the pools at the London Aquatic Centre truly accessible. The Poolpod 3.0 has advantages over the 2.0 including that it can be user operated which enhances the ability for disabled swimmers to utilise independence, something we all cherish. “I’ve been using the Poolpods since I started swimming at the London Aquatics Centre in January 2024. It is the most recognised accessible pool in the UK and it reflects well on Everyone Active - SLM that they are continuing investment in accessibility!” Chris Wells, Contract Manager at the London Aquatics Centre, said: "Justen’s story is a testament to his incredible resilience and drive. His achievements highlight what is possible with determination and the right support. We are proud that he was the first to use the new Poolpod 3.0 as part of his challenge.
