Science-based targets: What they are and why you should be setting them ?????? Science-based targets (SBTs) are climate goals that are developed in-line with current and accepted science for either climate or nature. These targets can range from reductions in GHG emissions to aligning facility water usage with local watershed capacities. The key components of an SBT are A) understanding published science that supports the target, B) an established target date and baseline measurement date / time frame, and C) a clear plan to achieve the target. SBTs are critical in the creation of a successful sustainability strategy, providing both relevance and pragmatism. Take, for example, the targets set by the fictional company We Set Targets, LLC: - Target 1: Reduce water usage by 10% - Target 2: Reduce scopes 1 & 2 GHG intensity by 25% by 2030 How would you change these to better align them with science? ?? For water, usage targets should be created based upon how the company’s existing water usage stands up against its source’s extraction capacity. If the reservoir We Set Targets’ facility sources its water from can only sustainably support the extraction of 10M gallons in an average rainfall year, and their use accounts for 20% of the current total extraction at 3M gallons annually (meaning 15M gallons are currently extracted annually by all parties), their target should be adjusted to “Reduce facility absolute water usage by 1M gallons annually.” Water targets are considered SBTs for nature, and should be designed in alignment with the Science Based Targets Network (SBTN) framework. SBTN recently released their updated Technical Guidance, which can be found here: https://lnkd.in/dCPqXV76 ?? For GHGs, the idea in most cases is setting a GHG % reduction goal that supports keeping the global temperature increase below 1.5° by 2050, in line with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5°C. Climate (GHG) targets should be designed in alignment with the requirements set by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
