Big shout out to #legalweek25 for a fab conference this year. I must admit I was skeptical about having Rob Lowe as a keynote but he was very funny and added a bit of wow factor to the opening of the conference. His observations around the need to continually move with the times and reinvent yourself were very pertinent. Thanks to my vox pop video guests Gloria Lee from Everlaw, Neil Araujo from iManage, Joshua Lenon from Clio - Cloud-Based Legal Technology and Travis Leon from Jigsaw for chatting with me, sharing knowledge and some fun. Thanks to Robert Kerr at Winston & Strawn LLP for hosting our Legal IT Insider #legaltech leaders roundtable and making us all feel so welcome, as we discussed some of the challenges around adoption. My event partner was Peppermint Technology/Litera and I'm grateful to everyone for the opportunity to run our first international event. ?? Well done to Christian Lang on his first Lega CreatorCon, helping us to test various models, build prompts, execute legal tasks, and wear pink t-shirts. ?? In the modern courtroom, complex, high-stakes litigation often involves complex, high-stakes ediscovery. While a ruling doesn’t come down based on what’s found during the discovery process, cases can be won or lost because of the findings. Due to this potential, parties will often negotiate prior to discovery actually beginning in an effort to lay down some ground rules for both sides. Privilege isn’t always narrowly defined, and although it’s there to help protect communication and work product between attorneys and their clients, what exactly falls under its scope can be subject to interpretation. ? Creating a privilege log is a critical step in defining these parameters, ensuring that privileged documents are properly accounted for while complying with legal obligations. Wrapping up 3 days of #LegalWeek25 in New York. It was great to meet with clients, partners and prospects, as well as former colleagues. I was going through my notes from the event, and here my (subjective) key takeaways: ??#AIAdoption in Law is Crucial and Evolving: - There’s growing importance of AI in legal practice. It's not just a future concept; firms need to start exploring and implementing AI tools like summarization, contract analysis, and chatbots. - The emphasis is on a practical approach: "Start small, find early adopters, try out what works/doesn't." AI implementation is an iterative process of experimentation and adaptation. There's also call for caution and a focus on specific use cases rather than hype. - The urgency is clear: "If you haven't started yet, you should." This underscores the competitive advantage that early adoption of AI can provide to law firms. ??#EssentialSkills for #Legal Professionals are Shifting: - Technical legal skills are no longer sufficient. "Soft skills" like critical thinking, problem-solving, adaptability, and relationship building are increasingly important. - Data and digital literacy are also highlighted as crucial, reflecting the growing importance of data in legal decision-making. ????Strategic and Cautious Approach to #LegalTech Investment: - The sessions on "Legal Cost Management" and "Metrics and Smart Investments in Legal Tech" stressed the need for a strategic and measured approach to technology. - There's a recognition of the challenges in predicting legal costs and the complexities of technology implementation. - The emphasis is on aligning technology investments with firm strategy, understanding pain points, and prioritizing adoption and change management. ??
