Climate Goals - Financing Climate Impacts At COP29 Azerbaijan, countries established a $300 billion annual financing target to help poorer nations tackle climate change impacts. While some hailed the deal, many criticized it as insufficient. The plan aims to raise $300 billion annually by 2035, building on a previous $100 billion commitment. It sets the stage for further discussions at next year's climate summit in the Amazon. While focused on developed nations' financial responsibilities, the agreement lacks specific actions for phasing out fossil fuels or enhancing renewable energy. #climatefinance #sustainability #energytransition #cop #icws https://lnkd.in/etnpfTaF

COP29 Azerbaijan: Mixed results, says climate activist. Baku - Ingmar Rentzhog, CEO of the climate action organization "We Don't Have Time," expressed disappointment with the outcomes of the recently concluded COP29 climate summit. Despite gathering thousands of attendees from around the world and discussing climate solutions, Rentzhog believes the urgency of the climate crisis needs to be adequately addressed. One of Rentzhog's primary concerns is the potential withdrawal of the United States from the Paris Agreement, which could significantly hinder global climate action efforts. He also criticized the slow pace of negotiations at COP29 and the need for more commitment to reducing emissions. However, Rentzhog remains optimistic about the potential for climate action. "We Don't Have Time" is launching a new campaign called "BUY MORE TIME" to raise awareness about the situation's urgency and encourage individuals and governments to take immediate action. "We need a reality check on the climate agenda," Rentzhog stated. "We're not on track to halve emissions by 2040." The current trajectory, he warned, could lead to climate tipping points, making it even more challenging to mitigate the effects of climate change. The campaign emphasizes the importance of reducing methane emissions, a significant contributor to global warming. Rentzhog believes that addressing methane emissions could be crucial in slowing down climate change. By highlighting the urgency of the climate crisis and promoting practical solutions, "We Don't Have Time" aims to mobilize public support and pressure policymakers to take bold action. #climatechange #cop #icws #methane #co2 #slimatesolutions #2050goals #parisagreement https://lnkd.in/eQBzAdB9

Discussions about green hydrogen are at the center of attention in Philadelphia. Philadelphia, PA (November 19, 2024)—The first day of the Green Hydrogen Summit Series recently concluded in Philadelphia.? It brought together stakeholders to discuss the pivotal role of green hydrogen in achieving the United States' climate goals. It provided a platform for industry leaders and experts to connect, collaborate, and advance the development of a sustainable hydrogen economy. A Focus on Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs A significant highlight of the summit was a panel discussion on regional clean hydrogen hubs. Experts shared insights into these hubs' potential to accelerate the deployment of green hydrogen projects. NYSERDA presented a compelling case for the role of clean hydrogen in decarbonizing New York's economy. Hydrogen Offtake Roundtables: Sustainability, Circularity, and Accountability The summit also featured hydrogen offtake roundtables, which focused on sustainability, circularity, and accountability. Participants explored strategies to ensure the production and utilization of green hydrogen. Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and Gas Network Transformation Discussions on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) highlighted this technology's potential to reduce aviation emissions significantly. Experts delved into the economic feasibility and technical challenges associated with achieving SAF production at scale by 2040. Another key topic was the integration of hydrogen into existing gas networks. While Pennsylvania prioritizes on-site hydrogen production for end-users, other regions are exploring the potential for blending hydrogen with natural gas, following successful results from Canada, New Jersey, and Hawaii, which provide valuable lessons for future hydrogen projects. Green Hydrogen for Transportation The future of transportation was discussed at the summit. Participants discussed the potential for green hydrogen, including cryogenic hydrogen, to power vehicles and heavy-duty trucks. Nikola Motors, a leading player in zero-emission transportation, showcased its innovative technologies and emphasized the importance of strategic partnerships in driving the adoption of hydrogen-powered vehicles. The discussions concluded that the growing momentum behind developing a green hydrogen economy in the United States had been reaffirmed. by Salima Hebbache Steven #philadelphia #greenhydrogen #transportation #hydrogenhubs #eastcoast #energytransition #SAF

The Smart City Expo World Congress 2024 in Barcelona showcased innovative solutions worldwide to make urban environments more resilient and efficient. There was a consensus among participants that their efforts to combat climate change and improve urban livability would continue regardless of the nature of the political leadership. 58% of the world's population lives in cities, about 4.7 billion people. Lauren Sorkin, Co-founder and Executive Director of the Resilient Cities Network, highlighted four critical dimensions for cities to enhance their resilience: 1. **Health and Wellbeing:** Assessing the city's and its residents' health. 2. **Economy and Society:** Evaluating job availability and the desire to attract diverse industries. 3. **Environment and Ecosystems:** Understanding the city's unique geographical and environmental challenges and opportunities. 4. **Leadership and Governance:** Strong leadership is essential to navigate urban challenges. Sorkin defined resilience as a city's capacity to recover from shocks like climate disasters or pandemics, highlighting the role of a Chief Resilience Officer. She also addressed eco-urbanism, which uses nature-based solutions for climate change and flooding. By engaging with residents and communicating effectively, cities can build stronger, more resilient communities. By Joan Michelson, MBA, READ MORE at https://lnkd.in/ecVxPykB

Reducing CO2 emissions in the oil and gas industry by 2030 The largest oil and gas companies have set diverse targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Recently, Shell overturned a 2021 ruling requiring a 45% cut in carbon emissions by 2030 from 2019 levels. Scientists indicate that to meet the Paris Agreement's goal of keeping global warming below 2 degrees Celsius, a 43% reduction in emissions by 2030 compared to 2019 is necessary. Comparing oil companies' climate plans is complex due to different approaches regarding intensity-based targets and Scope 3 emissions, representing over 90% of total emissions in integrated firms. Scope 1 includes direct operational emissions, Scope 2 covers emissions from power used in operations, and Scope 3 pertains to emissions from product combustion. Achieving these reductions will depend on a functional carbon market, advancements in carbon capture technology, and competitive hydrogen uses. #co2emission #goals2030 #oilandgas #energy #ccs #parisagreement #icws https://lnkd.in/eGSk6W3v

This year's most anticipated meeting, COP29, has begun with big news. At the UN Climate Change Conference, parties reached a key agreement on carbon credit standards under Article 6.4 of the Paris Agreement, enhancing the integrity of the international carbon market. COP29 Azerbaijan President stressed the urgent need for global leaders to increase climate ambition, labeling the summit a pivotal moment for commitment. He identified a fair New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) on climate finance as the top priority, noting that public mobilization may reach “hundreds of billions” while actual needs are in the trillions. Babayev urged nations to commit to 1.5-aligned Nationally Determined Contributions and to submit key reports. He called COP29 a “moment of truth” for the multilateral climate system, emphasizing the need to demonstrate commitment to climate goals. #summit #icws #world #environementalpreservation #climatechange https://lnkd.in/eVkrHByJ
