#Evanston. Next week! Join us on Thurs. Feb. 1 at noon at the Evanston History Center as we kick off Black History Month with "Black Health Professionals in Evanston (1890-1930)," a presentation by historian Rhonda K. Craven. Ms. Craven will highlight both the well-known and lesser known Black health professionals who lived and worked in Evanston from the late 19th century to 1930. Craven will explore this history while also providing a snapshot of health care challenges faced by Black Evanstonians that eventually led to the establishment of local institutions. Rhonda K. #Evanston. On page 37 of the January 9, 1958 issue of the Evanston Review, an article headlined, "Noted Alabama Minister to Open Forum Series at Beth Emet Synagogue," appeared. The article announced that the "Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr." would speak at the forum. His talk was titled, "A Great Time to Be Alive." King, the article noted, had "received more than 40 awards for his leadership in the Montgomery bus strike” and Time Magazine had "selected him as one of the outstanding personalities of the year." This was the first time King came to Evanston, but not the last. His later appearances included a 1962 event at the Orrington Hotel followed by a talk at the Unitarian Church of Evanston. Roughly 1,500 people attended the latter event where the 33-year old King told the crowd: “We confront a crisis in race relations in the United States. . . The old idea of segregation has exhausted itself, and American society is trying to orient itself around the new idea of integration.” Among the topics King discussed was the fight against housing discrimination. "As long as there is discrimination in housing," he said, "there will be de facto segregation in the schools, the churches, and community facilities." #evanstonillinois #martinlutherkingday #MLKDay Photo: Evanston Review, November 8, 1962.
