Biden’s Order: Let There Be Electric Trucks!
The Wall Street Journal Editorial Board a week ago, opined on the rollout of new EPA Truck Emissions rules (i.e.: new US electric truck mandates) and the impossibilities faced by truck manufacturers and logistics companies. This will cause not only serious economic, but also environmental damage as well. That in turn will create significant consumer pain by impacting the operation of the overall US supply chain and the costs related in the implemention of this plan, especially in the time frames demanded.
"EPA’s new emissions standards for heavy-duty trucks will effectively require that electric semi-trucks make up an increasing share of manufacturer sales from 2027 through 2032, similar to its recent rule for passenger cars. The difference is that the truck mandate is even more costly and fanciful.
"EVs make up less than 1% of U.S. heavy-duty truck sales, and nearly all are in California, which heavily subsidizes and mandates their purchase. EPA’s rule will require electric models to account for 60% of new urban delivery trucks and 25% of long-haul tractor sales by 2032. The harm is predictable in return for no climate benefit."
Will California be left holding the bag on subsidizing their outsized portion of the mess, including the cost to add grid capacity to service the required charging infrastructure needed for the already cash stressed PG&E and SCE?
Electric trucks are expected to consume 11% of California's generating capacity by 2030. How will the utilities build out new generation for that demand alone - and don't forget the actual delivery infrastructure needed to service these new facilities. What happens if Diablo Canyon is forced to shut down - it provides almost 10% of California's current generation capacity. HINT: it's not going to happen by building now non-existent offshore renewables, more PV solar mega farms, or clever demand management schemes.
The EPA is fast brewing a toxic mix of electric vehicle sales mandates and fanciful implementation schedules that just cannot be met, and are bound to poison the US economic engine. The plan as reported in the attached opinion piece will make you scratch your head. It is destined to fail in so many ways - are the lunatics running the asylum?
Please realize this is coming from the point of view of a company that stands to greatly benefit from these new standards. If and when the C40 Cities initative takes root, the numbers of needed urban delivery vehicles estimated by the WSJ will not even come close to be enough. The last mile segment of the equation will have to be serviced by delivery vehicles smaller than todays USPS suburban "long life vehicle" delivery trucks. Say hello to the #fireflyesv!!!, #lastmilelogistics, #lastmiledelivery, #gridcapacity, #evcharginginfrastructure, #evse, #doe
