"On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, we remember all those women we have lost. We recommit to all those who are beaten but who remain unbroken. We stand with those abused, traumatised, bullied and brutalised. ? "The European Parliament will double down its efforts to eradicate and prevent violence against women and girls."?- Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament. ? Earlier this year, Parliament adopted the first ever EU rules on combatting violence against women. ? This means that female genital mutilation, forced marriage, and several forms of cyber-violence will become illegal under EU law. ? The law sets out a common definition for modern ways of intimidating and silencing women such as non-consensual sharing of intimate material, cyberstalking, and cyber harassment. ? EU countries will have three years to implement these rules and take action to fight violence against women. Because women should never be targeted simply for being women.? ? The fate of the new European Commission will be decided this week. MEPs will vote on whether to approve the commissioners proposed by President-Elect Ursula von der Leyen. Parliament can only approve or reject the Commission as a whole. If successful, the new Commission will play a major role in determining the EU's political direction as it's responsible for creating new legislation. ? During this week's plenary session, Parliament will also vote on the EU's budget for 2025, debate whether enough is being done to tackle violence against women as well as discuss how to boost children's rights.

Russia’s so-called shadow fleet is exporting oil despite international sanctions to fund its illegal invasion of Ukraine. The fleet, made up of old tankers that are often uninsured and with unclear ownership, travels from Russian ports to international waters where the oil is transferred to other tankers for export via brokers. These ships and their operators use a variety of means to hide their activity such as avoiding control inspections and turning off or manipulating their tracking transponders to hide the vessel’s whereabouts. Parliament has passed a resolution calling for more EU action to crackdown on Russia’s shadow fleet, to stop Moscow from exploiting this trade. The EU and G7 have already taken action to stop this trade through measures such as imposing a $60 a barrel price cap on Russian oil and coordinated international sanctions. MEPs are calling for more targeted measures against shadow fleet vessels in the next EU sanctions packages, including all individual ships as well as their owners, operators, managers, accounts, banks and insurance companies.
