Equality, rights, and empowerment are the themes of this year’s UN #InternationalWomensDay. Last month, we released an updated series of women in STEM on our YouTube channel, featuring female colleagues who are shaping the #biotech community. ?????? They shared their journeys in science, their experiences in the EU Bubble, and the role of allies in advancing gender equality. However, marking today should serve as a reminder that taking action and celebrating the role of #women should not be limited only to this day. ?? Today we published our response to the call for Evidence on the evaluation of the Public Procurement Directives. We recognize the role of public procurement in advancing biomanufacturing processes and innovative biotech products. Biotech, indeed, is key to accomplishing EU ambitions for competitive, healthy, resilient and sustainable economies and societies. At the same time, we call for ad hoc actions in the healthcare and industrial biotechnology sectors to support the market expansion of bio-based products within a fit-for-purpose public procurement. ?? February 28 marks #RareDiseaseDay and its symbol: zebra’s stripes. But why the #zebra? ?? ? In medical schools, professors used to teach ‘’ When you hear hoofbeats, think of horses, not zebras’’, an expression coined in the late 1940s by Dr. Theodore Woodward, a physician and professor at the University of Maryland. The metaphor encourages students to associate certain symptoms with the most common diseases. However, the rare disease community decided to embrace the zebra as a symbol of their uniqueness. ?? The path to developing treatments for all rare diseases remains?challenging. However, thanks to the latest scientific and #biotech advancements, the number of life-changing therapies reaching patients has increased over time. ? EuropaBio is dedicated to promoting biotechnologies in Europe to ensure that innovative therapies reach patients. ?? Read more about the topic in the blog post by Pedro Franco, Senior Director, Head of Europe Global Regulatory and Scientific Policy at Merck and Jan Swiderski, Senior Director, Head of Global Public Affairs & Advocacy at Ipsen and Beatrice Rocco, Healthcare Policy Coordinator at EuropaBio - the European Association for Bioindustries ??https://lnkd.in/e-5XEp3V
