?? This week, Eurogas Senior Policy Advisor Lucia Verardi attended the Industry CCUS Conference, organised by Fortes Media Group. ?? This event took place close to the Porthos project, where CO2 from industries in the Port of Rotterdam will be transported and stored in depleted gas fields under the North Sea. ?? Lucia reflected on the key challenges Europe has faced over the last legislative cycle, amidst which #CCUS technologies have emerged as a potential solution to bridge the gap between industrial #competitiveness and #decarbonisation. However, significant work remains to scale these technologies effectively and cost-efficiently. The conference also featured interesting discussions on: ?? the global uptake of CCUS technologies ?? the pivotal role of ETS/CBAM in setting the right carbon price ?? available funding mechanisms and business models for scaling up CCUS technologies ? ?? Thank you to all speakers and attendees for their insights and participation at the first in-person #EurogasTech conference. We discussed decarbonisation in action: the potential of #bioenergy and #hydrogen for #CCS. ?? The conference started with a welcome speech from Eurogas’ President Cristian Signoretto who emphasised technology's importance in shaping the energy transition, likening it to past revolutions in human history. Technology openness, he said, is critical for reaching Europe’s decarbonisation goals. ?? Following, Jeroen Schuppers (EU Science, Research and Innovation) highlighted that achieving EU climate goals means scaling CCS in industry and bioenergy, while pushing investment in innovation. Also, more support is needed to make storage sites viable. ?? Dr. Harald Hecking from Uniper spoke about the crucial role of #BECCS in reaching Europe’s climate targets. To truly leverage #BECCS, we need reliable EU-wide CCS infrastructure, clear CO? quality standards, stable biomass sustainability criteria & cross-border cooperation. ??During the first panel, speakers Dr. Harald Hecking (Uniper), Eadbhard Pernot (Zero Emissions Platform), Adam Grachek (Biorecro), Caroline Braun (Landw?rme GmbH), and Ruud Kempener (DG ENER), emphasized #BECCS as a key negative emission technology with the ability to decarbonise important sectors and lead us to net zero. In order to be a leader in carbon-negative solutions, the EU must address funding, streamline permitting, and help establish competitive market incentives. ??MEP Tsvetelina Penkova joined us for a keynote, mentioning that cooperation with industry is key in order to meet the target from the #NZIA to achieve an annual CO2 storage capacity of 50 million tonnes by 2030. ???Her speech was followed by a deep dive with Siegfried Kiss into the RAG Austria AG energy valley, and the second panel of the day about the synergies between hydrogen and CC(U)S. Speakers Johan Leuraers (Equinor), Goher Ur Rehman Mir (SHV Energy), Larissa Lee Beck (Clean Air Task Force), Laurent Remy (Fluxys), Charlotte Melchiorsen (Invest in Denmark) and Siegfried Kiss (RAG Austria AG) agreed that in order to accelerate the deployment of #hydrogen and #CCUS, the EU should create a supportive regulatory framework by avoiding overregulation, and promote collaboration and dialogue across the value chain. ??Our conference closed with a keynote from Holcim Bulgaria's CEO Rossen Papazov about the #EasternLights project, which aims to create a CCUS cluster in Eastern Europe. ?? Eurogas and other members of the Joint Energy Associations Group (#JEAG), call on EU Institutions to retain the Ancillary Activity Exemption in the ongoing MiFID II commodities review. ?? The Ancillary Activity Exemption plays a critical role in fostering liquid, competitive, and efficient #energymarkets, enabling secure, affordable, and sustainable energy supplies. Removing this exemption would introduce excessive regulatory burdens, which could pose risks to liquidity and raise #costs for consumers, hindering Europe's ambitions for the energy transition. We also urge policymakers to ensure the review considers existing regulations (such as MiFID/IFR) and fully assesses recent enhancements like stronger market surveillance and liquidity management rules before recommending further changes. ? A comprehensive and balanced approach is vital to maintain Europe's global #competitiveness while supporting the transition to a carbon-neutral energy system. ? Gaseous fuels are essential for achieving the #energytransition, and become even more crucial when deviations from desired pathways occur along the way. ?? Natural, renewable, and low-carbon gases can bring #resilience and #competitiveness to our decarbonisation, while balancing the energy trilemma of affordability, security, and sustainability. These conclusions come from a study that Eurogas commissioned from Frontier Economics, in a launch event held in the Euractiv Network Office yesterday. ?? A recent report by Frontier Economics shows why gases are essential for Europe to sustain net-zero energy targets. ?Gases are uniquely positioned to ensure the #affordability, #security and #sustainability of Europe's energy system. This report is titled 'Ensuring #Resilience in the European Energy Transition: Strategic Use of Gases to Meet EU Climate Ambitions' and was commissioned by Eurogas. ?? Based on the findings, Eurogas urges European leaders to act now to deliver essential gases on time. This means focusing investment and policies on rapidly phasing in #renewable and #lowcarbon gases and using existing infrastructure.
