?? New Maryland Legislation Targets PFAS in Biosolids ??? PFAS, including PFOS and PFOA, are synthetic chemicals found in everyday products like cookware, packaging, and firefighting foam. Over time, they have made their way into our environment ??—contaminating soil, water, and even our food chain ???. These chemicals are known to persist and can accumulate in the human body, posing potential health risks ?? ?? Maryland’s New Law is taking action! By October 1, 2024, the state will begin strict testing, monitoring, and mitigation protocols to reduce PFAS contamination in biosolids—waste from wastewater treatment plants that’s used as fertilizer. Here’s what’s coming: ?? PFAS testing protocols for industrial users by Jan 1, 2025 ?? Action levels for industrial discharge by June 1, 2025 ?? Mitigation plans for biosolids land application by Sept 1, 2025 ?? New sampling and reporting requirements for waste water treatment plans ?? EPA Method 1633 will be used to monitor PFAS levels in biosolids, ensuring safe land applications and reducing environmental risk.
