"So why do many prefer complicated, high-tech, faraway gadgets instead?" Oh, that's easy! - "Complicated, high-tech" means "I can build a business plan and raise capital!" "Faraway" means "Change can wait. I don't have to do anything scary or risky today!" "Gadgets" means "profit opportunity!" In a word, the answer is "capitalism". As it always is, when we're talking about destroying the planet, and our childrens' futures.
