Supporting Early Career Ocean Professionals is an investment in the future of our oceans and the sustainability of our planet. Which is why we were proud to support Nikia Gooding in attending the 2024 All-Atlantic Ocean Research and Innovation Alliance Forum (AAORIA). Here’s what Nikia had to say about their experience*: “My name is Nikia Gooding, I am a Remote Sensing Researcher at Institute of Marine Affairs (IMA) Trinidad & Tobago: @IMAgovTT. I am actively involved as the national focal point for Trinidad and Tobago’s membership to the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) and assist with representing the national focal point for Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS). My professional experience includes oil spill detection and monitoring, blue carbon - specifically for mangroves and seagrasses, coastline change detection and modelling, mangrove mapping and management, seagrass and benthic habitat mapping and management, and the management and sharing of spatial data towards greater accessibility and discoverability through the promotion and use of the IMA's Marine Data Hub. Future areas of interest include sargassum forecasting and ocean health monitoring using satellite imagery and other remotely sensed products. As the only ECOP from my country and from the Caribbean region [at the 2024 AAORIA Forum], I would like to graciously thank my sponsors. My participation was funded by the Horizon Project EU4OceanObs, [through OceanBRIDGES and GEO Blue Planet]. This was my first interaction with the AAORIA community, despite its scope directly aligning with that of the IMA’s, and as a direct extension of my professional experience as an ocean researcher. There were a number of meaningful connections during this experience that were only made possible by my physical attendance at the for a, one of which was [on] the lack of Tropical Atlantic, specifically Caribbean inclusion, which John Bell acknowledged in the closing forum remarks and stated that the AAORIA community is willing to hear ideas to change that. There was also the recognition among the coastal observations and modelling priority area that there is a current lack of EO [Earth Observations] for Ocean Observations. GIS and Earth Observations presents an untapped resource for Atlantic Ocean Observations that could be leveraged in many locations, where in-situ monitoring and observations are absent as well as to supplement near-real time data collection. It was truly an impactful experience, interacting with the All-Atlantic community, and participating as an ECOP during the Intergenerational Dialogue Event.
