???? Today marks World #COPD Day, a global initiative aimed at reducing the burden of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and raising awareness about this progressive #lung condition. As a leading cause of death worldwide, it is essential to highlight the importance of early diagnosis, effective management and risk reduction. We in EU PAL-COPD, as an #EUfunded project, are proudly joining this year's #WorldCOPDDay initiative. ???? EU PAL-COPD is currently conducting a pilot study to further roll out a stepped-wedge cluster-randomised controlled #trial in 2025. This trial and the data collected are crucial in ensuring that the ICLEAR-EU #intervention can be successfully rolled out across hospitals in different #EU countries delivering care to patients with advanced COPD as per local standards of best practice. ???? The ICLEAR-EU intervention is a novel approach that integrates #palliative and end-of-life care into the standard care pathway for individuals with advanced COPD. This is a staged, service-based, multi-component intervention model, focused on early identification of palliative care needs, multidisciplinary care integration, communication, advance care planning, and ongoing review and management of #palliativecare needs. Dear abstract submitter, there are only 18 days left until submission closes! The absolute deadline for submission is 23:59 on 31 October 2024. In previous years you may have been used to (expected even) an extension to the deadline, and the granting of which had become an EAPC tradition. However, this has led to complaints of inequity and unfairness in the system. So this year we have ONE deadline and there will be NO extensions. We are using a new abstract submission platform this year, and the system will be automatically closed. If you don't submit your abstract by midnight CET on 31 October 2024, the next opportunity to submit your abstract will be for the congress in 2026. Submit ASAP and don't miss your chance! We are looking to expand the VUB EU PAL-COPD team with a new PhD candidate! EU PAL-COPD is a Horizon EU project aiming to improve quality of life for people with advanced COPD, by introducing a model of integrated palliative care. For this project, we are looking for a PhD candidate with a background in the social sciences, with specific experiences and/or skills in qualitative research. Working at the End-of-Life Care Research Group on Vrije Universiteit Brussel's Jette campus, you will be part of an open, diverse workspace together with top researchers in palliative and end-of-life care. Today, on World Lung Day, we recognise the urgent need to address the growing problem of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (#COPD) and highlight the advancements being made in its treatment and management. As we observe this day, we want to shine a light on our dedicated partners from the European Respiratory Society and their recent successful event, the #ERS Congress 2024, held in Vienna, Austria. ?? From 7-11 September, we were honoured to showcase our EU PAL-COPD project at one of the largest events in the respiratory care field. This event brought together over 20,000 delegates, both in-person and online, to share the present the latest advances in respiratory medicine and science. ?? Looking ahead, we are thrilled to share that the next ERS Congress will be held in Amsterdam, Netherlands from 27 September to 1 October, 2025. With a theme of "Respiratory Health Around the Globe," the congress will focus on finding global solutions to improve respiratory health, addressing the challenges and differences faced by individuals worldwide. ?? EU PAL-COPD, in partnership with Lungs Europe, a leading European organisation dedicated to promoting lung health and supporting patients with respiratory diseases, is committed to acknowledging the struggles faced by COPD patients and their families. ?? Through the EU PAL-COPD framework, we are dedicated to ensuring patient involvement and meeting their expectations, needs, and requirements throughout the project. This is where Lungs Europe plays a crucial role, bringing a wealth of expertise and involving their Patient Advisory Group to incorporate patient voices and feedback. ?? Congratulations to our EU PAL-COPD partner, Els Verschuur from Long Alliantie Nederland on her successful poster presentation at the ERS Congress on their multidisciplinary blended learning training programme, "Palliative Care in COPD." The programme generated a lot of interest and sparked engaging discussions. The program consists of an e-learning module on the identification of the palliative phase in COPD, palliative care needs assessment and symptom management, in preparation for two face-to-face sessions. These sessions focus on 1?? advance care planning conversations with role-play with training actors 2?? multidisciplinary cooperation, particularly between primary and secondary healthcare professionals. ? The program was thoroughly tested and evaluated in two hospital regions in the Netherlands, with a total of 25 participants from various healthcare backgrounds such as pulmonologists, general practitioners, COPD nurses, district nurses, and palliative care consultants.
