EU Delegation to the Republic of Korea hosted a special event in honour of the International Women’s Day (IWD) on 7 March 2025 in Seoul. Under the theme "Towards More Resilient and Secure Democracies: Women in Security and Defence," this event brought together women with different backgrounds (academia, military officers, experts) from South Korea as well as Europe, emphasising their role in shaping more stable and resilient democratic societies. This event built on the EU-RoK Security and Defence partnership signed in November 2024 and provided a platform to discuss ways to strengthen women's leadership in these sectors. Aligned with UN Security Council Resolution 1325, this successful event emphasised the EU’s commitment to integrating gender equality into its Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP), with 2025 marking the 25th anniversary of the resolution’s adoption. This event also built synergies with the EU project ESIWA+ (Enhancing the EU's Security Cooperation In & With Asia & the Indo-Pacific) by exploring challenges, successes and opportunities in advancing women’s participation in these fields. More than 150 participants (embassies from EU MS and third countries, RoK government, students, academia) gathered for this very timely event, which was also largely covered in the RoK press

#DPA is very pleased to support an EU to South Korea Study Visit, to strengthen Cybersecurity Skills & Education cooperation as part of the EU-ROK Digital Partnership! The global cybersecurity skills gap is a pressing challenge that demands international collaboration. As cyber threats evolve, so must our ability to train and equip cybersecurity professionals. The 1st EU-South Korea Cybersecurity Skills & Higher Education Study Visit is taking place from March 10-13, 2025, in South Korea, as part of the Digital Partnerships in Action (DPA) project. This initiative aligns with the EU-ROK Digital Partnership, strengthening cooperation between the EU and South Korea. During the first day of the visit representatives of several EU Member States had the pleasure to meet the EU Ambassador to the Republic of Korea Maria Castillo Fernandez and colleagues from the Government of ROK and EU Diplomatic missions to ROK. ?? What’s the Goal of the Visit? This study visit is a unique opportunity to: ? Exchange knowledge on cybersecurity education models between the EU and South Korea. ? Explore public-private partnerships in cybersecurity training and skills development. ? Address the global cybersecurity skills shortage by building sustainable capacity-building strategies. ? Establish a roadmap for future EU-ROK collaboration in higher education and workforce development. ?? Key Highlights of the Visit ?? Meetings with Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA), KAIST, BoB, NCSC, KISIA, and Pangyo Techno Valley. ?? Thematic Workshop on cybersecurity skills development & curriculum modernisation. ?? Networking sessions with top cybersecurity experts, government officials, and industry leaders. ?? Knowledge-sharing on AI-driven threat detection, quantum encryption, and public-private partnerships ?? Why This Matters? Cyber threats don’t stop at borders, and neither should our efforts to strengthen cybersecurity resilience. By learning from South Korea’s cutting-edge cybersecurity initiatives, EU stakeholders will gain insights to enhance their own national strategies. This study visit represents a concrete step toward international collaboration in cybersecurity education, ensuring that Europe and Korea remain at the forefront of digital security innovation. ?? On this occasion, the Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Korea will organise “Perspectives on Women in Security and Defence” discussing women’s achievements and challenges toward gender equality in the Republic of Korea and Europe. As a follow up of the EU-RoK’s Security and Defence partnership signed in November 2024, the EU Delegation acknowledges the importance of women in security and defence as a fundamental requirement in order to establish truly inclusive and secure societies. Therefore, the event seeks to provide a platform to discuss concrete action in engaging, cultivating and advancing women’s leadership in all aspects of the security and defence community. This acts in accordance with the EU’s commitment to push the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security (WPS) at the centre of its Common Security and Defence Policy. The EU Delegation will invite women speakers with backgrounds in security and defence to raise awareness among Korean public in the importance of equal participation of women in all processes of conflict prevention, peace-making, peace building and post-conflict rehabilitation. The event will also aim to derive actionable policies with the inclusion of gender equality and human rights perspectives to unlock women’s potential in the sector and to contribute as a cornerstone in achieving long-lasting peace and prosperity.
