  • ?? Congratulations to Bolu Oluwamakinde on a successful thesis defense! Bolu’s research, "Assessing the Utilization of Building Information Modelling (BIM) in the Preservation of Cultural Heritage: A Case Study of Ashe-Street Courthouse," highlights the powerful intersection of technology, heritage conservation, and construction management. This work is an example of interdisciplinary collaboration between the Department of Computing, @Clark Nexsen, Jeremy Ross in the Office of Administration, and Dr. Moin Uddin in the Department of Engineering. By leveraging BIM, Bolu’s research demonstrates how digital tools can revolutionize historic preservation, improving documentation accuracy, project coordination, and sustainability. The Ashe-Street Courthouse project is a testament to the impact of applied research in bridging modern technology with historic preservation. Chelsie Dubay, Ed.D. served as Bolu's thesis supervisor. Join us in celebrating Bolu’s achievement and the power of cross-disciplinary collaboration!

  • Dr. Khan's research uses machine learning to improve the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) and extends into areas like preventive medicine and beyond.

  • The Department of Computing celebrates Information Management graduate Student Mariatu Mahmoud, who successfully defended her thesis titled "AI for Sustainability in Appalachian Businesses: Challenges and Successes." Her qualitative study examined how small businesses in Central Appalachia perceive and adopt Artificial Intelligence (AI) to advance sustainable development. Her findings reveal that AI can significantly enhance efficiency, streamline workflows, and improve business visibility. However, challenges such as trust concerns, limited resources, and resistance to change continue to hinder adoption. To address these barriers, Mariatu’s research outlines strategies that emphasize the importance of AI literacy, financial support, community collaboration, and ethical AI implementation. These strategies offer a roadmap for small businesses seeking to integrate AI-driven innovation while maintaining the region’s cultural identity. Her research contributes to the broader conversation on how AI can be leveraged to support economic growth in underrepresented communities. Mariatu currently plans to pursue a Ph.D. in Information Management. Mariatu's thesis advisor is Chelsie Dubay, Ed.D. Are you ready to make an impact? • ETSU’s Cybersecurity Team, the Cyber Bucs, made an impressive debut in MITRE's annual?Embedded Capture the Flag (eCTF)?competition, securing?17th place?out of 95 teams from institutions across nine countries. The competition, which concluded last week with an awards ceremony at the JFK Presidential Library in Boston, showcased the skills and expertise of teams in securing critical embedded systems. The eCTF competition, hosted by MITRE Engenuity, focuses on securing critical systems that utilize embedded hardware, presenting unique and complex security challenges. Unlike traditional Capture the Flag, students in this competition design and implement systems meeting specific security and functionality requirements. In this year's competition, teams were tasked with developing supply chain security solutions for microcontrollers on medical devices, ensuring device integrity while safeguarding sensitive data. ETSU's Cyber Bucs, led by Captain Scott Chandler, along with team members Adam Hooven, Reid Bandy, Justin Dubin, and Anthony Vandergriff, demonstrated exceptional skills in both offensive and defensive strategies. Dr. Biju Bajracharya, advisor to the team, highlighted the importance of such competitions in preparing students for real-world scenarios. "Participating in such hands-on, real-world scenarios is crucial for developing a skilled cybersecurity and STEM workforce capable of addressing evolving cyber threats," said Dr. Bajracharya. MITRE's eCTF competition is renowned for its realistic scenarios and the opportunity it provides for students to build cybersecurity skills. This year's competition drew a record-breaking 773 students, demonstrating its growing popularity and impact on cybersecurity education. The success of the Cyber Bucs team in MITRE's eCTF competition highlights the?College of Business and Technology?and the?Department of Computing’s?commitment to providing students with hands-on learning experiences and preparing them for successful careers in cybersecurity. Congratulations to the Cyber Bucs on their hard work and amazing accomplishments! (post taken from ETSU CBAT News)
