On December 1st we commemorate World AIDS Day. This annual awareness serves as a reminder that we remain steadfast in our commitment to preventing new HIV infections while providing services to those globally that need it most. A key part in HIV prevention and care is enacting strategies that can benefit communities, action-based groups, and organizations working to reduce HIV for the people most impacted. To learn more about those strategies, check out the blog, “3 HIV Prevention Strategies that Benefit Priority Populations,” by ETRians Khaila Thomas, Marketing and Communications Coordinator, and Samuella Ware, Ph.D., MPH, Senior Research Associate II. Transformational leadership | Health Equity | Chief Executive Officer at ETR | Founding member of Chief San Francisco
#ChiefX San Francisco did not disappoint! Thank you to Carolyn Childers and Lindsay Kaplan for the opportunity. What an honor to share the stage with Claire Rauh McDonough and Kristen Berman to discuss strategies for leading with confidence and impact with expert moderating from Bridget Winston. Admittedly, it was a bit daunting to follow the amazing Kara Swisher and bookended by the wisdom of the incredible Anne Morriss. It is always a privilege to share any insights about leadership at ETR , but it was especially thrilling in that room of hundreds of powerhouse women including rockstars that I have met through Chief who have turned into members of my personal Board of Directors, Michon Pinnix and Susan Drucker Hunsaker, PCC. An inspiring day with insights that I will integrate immediately and connections for a lifetime.

Today is the Great American Smokeout! The American Cancer Society recognizes this event annually on the third Thursday of November to encourage smokers to quit smoking for one day as a start to their smokefree life while reducing their cancer-risk. Smoking causes an estimated 480,000 deaths each year and more than 16 million Americans live with a smoking-related disease. Out of the top 10 leading causes of death among Native Americans, six of them have been linked to smoking. Learn more on how smoking disproportionately affects Native Americans, quit resources for their communities, and ETR’s Native Health and Wellness projects. According to the?U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), secondhand smoke causes approximately 7,330 deaths from lung cancer each year. Smoking indoors with other household members puts everybody at risk for secondhand smoke exposure. Primary care professionals can offer interventions and strategies that can reduce the prevalence of smoking in the home, improve air quality, and advance health outcomes for at-risk populations. Learn about this topic in a Physician's Weekly article by ETRians Neil E. Klepeis, Ph.D., Senior Research Scientist, Lauren Ranalli, MPH (she/hers), Director of Communications and Public Affairs, and Colleen Sargent, Research Associate I.
