🤝 The European energy trading community is a pretty tight-knit group. We're dealing with similar challenges, after all. Which is why we all welcome opportunities to network, sharing ideas and opinions with our industry peers. The invite-only Energy Trading Club series organized by our friends at Previse Systems provides a relaxed setting for this type of exchange. We're looking forward to co-hosting the next installment in Utrecht on October 17. 🗣️ Our independent advisor Roy Muller will talk about "Data and AI Transformation in Energy Trading". As a former Head of Trading who moved into special projects (acquisitions, turnarounds and digital transformation), Roy has both an in-depth understanding of trading technology and the ability to evaluate automation opportunities through an investor's eyes. With this unique perspective, Roy will discuss key transformations in 3 business domains: 🔸 Short-term optimization 🔸 Long-term trading 🔸 Structuring and origination We hope to see you there! #ETRM #EnergyTrading #ETCUtrecht #TradingTechnologyExperts

⚒️ It looks like the metals market could soon feature Guarantees of Origin (GO). But what would the benefits of this be? This is what we want find out in this part of our series, #NextGenCertificates, where we dive into the expanding role of GOs and renewables certificates across industries. Right now, Western mining companies are struggling to compete with cheap Chinese metals, some of which, as Ernest Scheyder and Pratima Desai from Reuters point out, "use coal-generated electricity, child labor or other practices not meeting the standards set by many governments and manufacturers." This has led to calls for a two-tier pricing system that rewards “green” metals - those produced sustainably. 🌱 However, this situation puts buyers, especially in the automotive industry, in a tough spot. They’re torn between the need for sustainable sourcing and the pressure to keep costs down. 🤔 So, what could be some upsides of sustainable sourcing through GOs? 🏈 First, GOs would help level the playing field, allowing Western mines to remain competitive by emphasizing their sustainable practices. 🏭 By promoting green metals, Western countries can also reduce their reliance on metals from regions with less rigorous environmental and labor standards. 💚 For companies, especially those in the EU, GOs offer a clear path to achieving and proving compliance with increasingly strict environmental, social, and governance (ESG) targets. But as promising as this sounds, some key questions still need answers before GOs for metal are introduced, such as: - Who will certify these green metals? - What standards will be applied? - How will these certificates be tracked through the supply chain? For more information on this issue, check out the full Reuters article: https://lnkd.in/gj9xqAnJ #GuaranteesOfOrigin #SustainableSourcing #CommoditiesTrading

📣 Let's GOOO! On September 2nd, the European Energy Exchange AG has launched futures contracts for Guarantees of Origin (GO) market, which cover three technology-specific products for wind, hydro, and solar. 🌞 Want to know how we all will benefit from this? You've come to the right place, as in this first part of our new series, #NextGenCertificates, we'll look into the expanding role of GOs and renewables certificates across industries. Until now, GOs have typically been traded over-the-counter (OTC) after the renewable energy is produced. With EEX’s new futures market, participants can now trade GOs in advance, locking in prices and delivery months before the power is generated. 📦 This shift to an exchange-traded format brings several advantages: 📈 Standardized contracts – Participants can now trade with more confidence, knowing the contracts are backed by the exchange, ensuring transparency and reducing counterparty risk. 💡 Price transparency – With trading on the exchange, GO pricing becomes more visible and reliable, helping companies hedge their renewable energy exposure more effectively. 🔒 Security through clearing – EEX’s European Commodity Clearing (ECC) ensures that transactions are processed securely, adding an additional layer of safety to the market. What kinds of GO contracts can be traded? 🌊 European Hydro Power 💨 European Wind Power ☀️ European Solar Power 🔋 European Renewable Power (hydro/wind/solar/biomass) With trading starting this September, it’s clear the GO market is set out for significant growth, and these futures are expected to play an important role in driving the energy transition. 🌱 For more details, check out the FAQ: https://lnkd.in/dSyZwX4G #GuaranteesOfOrigin #SustainableEnergy #EEX #GOFutures #EnergyTransition

Say hi to our man with a plan, Gunnar van Fessem, in this installment of our #MeetTheTeam series. Not only is he our Director of Sales & Business Development in Europe, he's also got some mean cooking skills. 🥘 1️⃣ What do you do at ETRMServices? Gunnar: I do business development, which means that I am trying to find new customers and projects within Europe. 2️⃣ How did you get into the energy trading business? I accidentally rolled into an energy project long ago and was asked how my energy trading knowledge was at that point. The person who asked was himself very knowledgeable in energy trading so I answered: if I can talk to you for about an hour I think my knowledge about energy will be pretty decent. That's how I got my start in energy trading, and I haven't looked back since. 3️⃣ What do you particularly like about the company? I love the freedom we have. I’ve never fit into big corporate structures - even as a kid I wasn't a fan of hierarchies, and that stuck with me. ETRMS is a flat, pragmatic organization. Decisions can be made fast because there are not a lot of layers to it. 4️⃣ What do you enjoy most about the projects you work on? We're not just doing projects; in many situations, we are creating a significant footprint that allows us to make a real difference for our customer. They visibly appreciate that and this gives the projects a level of energy that I really enjoy. 5️⃣ What does that mean long-term? Of course, there are larger risks involved but if we succeed we can see the meaningful impact we make. We're leaving behind a legacy. The best feeling is when we speak to a customer again after a decade and see our 10 year old implementations still work successfully. 6️⃣ Do you have a certain reputation within the company? Even though I’m not the most technical person in the company, I'm probably known for being able to bridge the gap between the IT and business side of energy trading processes for our customers. 7️⃣ What do you do in your free time? I’m a foodie and love to cook, especially Indonesian and Thai. Thanks for interviewing with us, Gunnar! We appreciate your passion, which gives a special spice to our team. 🌶️ Want to meet him in person? We are sponsoring Energy Trading Week happening September 24 & 25 in London. Don't be shy! Say hi and talk to Gunnar when you see him. 👋 Or drop him a direct message at Gunnar van Fessem to set up a talk. #EnergyTradingWeek #TradingTechnologyExperts

🚚 Moving is never easy - whether you're going to a new home or a new ETRM system, things can get lost, misplaced or damaged. 💥 For the latter, one of the biggest headaches is the data migration. To ensure a smooth transition for our customers, we carry out a comprehensive, proven functional and technical approach: 🗺️ Create a Data Migration Blueprint defining all data elements to be transitioned, along with a validated target database configuration to ensure accurate risk and other reporting for the future. This includes a testing and reconciliation framework that is critical for audit post data-migration. 🧰 Transfer the data using our flexible ETRMHub toolkit, which significantly streamlines the physical move of data and can match any API thrown at it. Complex aggregation and disaggregation rules are no problem; the same goes for conversions from source formats of any kind to target formats of any kind. And all of the complex logic can combine multiple sources or multiple targets for automated data migration. This toolkit-based approach recently moved 5 million rows of data in a couple of minutes and is auto-configured to repeat the process as often as necessary. ⏱️ Our quick, repeatable process with full audit and documented logic enables a solid migration that gives management, IT and business users alike confidence in your new data "home". 🏡 #DataMigration #ReImplementation #ETRM #TradingTechnologyExperts

Updating your documentation didn't make the list for spring cleaning? 🫣 Well, the next best moment for everyone's least favorite task is now - in our #SummerCleanup series. Let's just get it over with: We all know that documentation tends to be the stepchild of IT. No judgement here - but it can make support harder when your docs are a a version (or more) behind the times. Or when that clever fix isn't explained clearly. ✍️ So after you've spent your summer doing minor upgrades, applying patches, removing workarounds, cleaning up reports and updating test plans, you can wrap up by making sure your documentation, guidelines and practices are all in order. To get started, consider the following that might trigger the need for a doc refresh: 🪜 System updates 🛠️ New or modified reports ⚙️ Minor improvements or fixes 🔗 External changes (e.g. third-party APIs) 🪓 Deleted workarounds or unused processes And while you're at it, don't forget your documentation system! Check out this handy cleanup guide for Confluence: https://lnkd.in/dhFeyCf6 This way, your documentation is up to date for your next big fall project. #Documentation #ETRMsystem #TradingTechnologyExperts

System updates are great - unless they blow up existing processes. 💥 This is why regression testing is so critical. In this installment of our #SummerCleanup series, we'll take a peek at regression test plans. 🧹 Ideally, you should revise these plans every time you make a change. But in reality, that task often ends up on the back burner and you just go with the tests you have. However, while you're using the quieter summertime to run minor updates and clean up workarounds, it's the perfect opportunity to also rework the regression tests used to validate these activities. At the same time you can streamline your plans, retiring processes that no longer exist. 🤖 At our managed services engagements, we create a suite of regression test scripts, which include some proprietary logic that allows full test execution within a 1-2 day period. However, these also require some maintenance to keep up with rapid business and market changes. Summertime test script refreshes help get us ready for very busy fall initiatives. Furthermore, since a managed service team handles the same client for years, they really get to know the client's systems. They're aware which processes and interfaces are the trickiest and need the most thorough attention. 🧼 This helps to ensure smooth, clean updates with minimal user interruption. #RegressionTesting #ETRM #TradingTechnologyExperts

Summertime is a great time to finally release your IT baggage and find inner (system) peace. 🧘♂️ As we've been talking about in our #SummerCleanup series, with fewer users around and no big projects looming, the warmer months are perfect for getting your systems in top-top shape. Consider Jira. You rely on it to keep you team organized and productive. But in time, it tends to collect lots of garbage. Especially lots of open threads. Duplicates that were never merged, or old threads that just never got priority and never will. Meanwhile they're messing up your KPIs. It's time to let go. But that's not everything. There's plenty more you can get rid of: 🗑️ Custom fields that are empty or unused 🗑️ Inactive users 🗑️ Unnecessary or duplicate user groups 🗑️ Old, inactive projects Just close them finally and give yourself some peace. Of course, there is some important planning and prep work to do before you cut everything loose. Thankfully, Atlassian has a handy guide for cleanups: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dEY9PadH 🕊️ So let go of the unnecessary that's weighing you down, and enjoy the calm that follows. At least until everyone comes back in September. 😉 #ETRM #DevOps #TradingTechnologyExperts

🐰 Running reports can often feel like you’re Alice chasing a white rabbit in a waistcoat towards a Wonderland of never ending work. At the same time, you don’t want to mess with the system because it’s mission-critical and still getting the job done. Why fix something that isn’t broken? In this installment of our #SummerCleanup series, we’ll explore why it might be worth reconsidering that mindset. Well, the Mad Hatter might agree since his concept of time is wildly different from ours, but in today’s world, time is of the essence: You simply don’t have hours to write a report, just as you don’t have hours to solve riddles of the Cheshire cat. 😼 That’s why streamlining and optimizing your company’s reporting process can have a significant impact on your business. It improves your trader’s performance as they no longer have to wait hours for the necessary information to make the most profitable deals. And imagine how you’ll feel when you’re free to do other important work that has been stacking up. Here’s an example of how we helped a client do just that: The client took hours to calculate fuel hedges to be executed after the morning power auction, resulting in late nights for traders. We optimized the entire process and made performance improvements to individual reports, which cut the time in half. The upshot: traders can now access the markets much earlier. ⏰ So what are you waiting for? Join us and drink the potion that will help your trading business grow to the next level. 🥛 #SummerCleanup #ETRM #trading #energytrading #reporting
