In our latest newsletter, we explore how primary care providers (PCPs) are pivotal in detecting and managing alcohol use disorder (AUD). With their unique position in the healthcare system, PCPs can identify early signs of problematic drinking, provide routine screenings, patient education, and ongoing support. This week, we feature insights from Casey Grover, MD FACEP FASAM, on integrating addiction medicine into everyday practice. Dr. Grover shares his journey into Addiction Medicine and offers practical steps for PCPs to take in early detection and treatment of AUD. Read more below! Do Americans drink too much? A recent article in The Wall Street Journal has highlighted the ongoing debate surrounding alcohol consumption and its health risks. Key takeaways include: ???Health Risks:?Increasing evidence shows that even moderate alcohol consumption can lead to significant health risks, including various cancers and cardiovascular diseases. ????Lobbying Efforts:?The alcohol industry has ramped up its lobbying efforts to influence public policy and perceptions. These efforts include funding scientific research that downplays the negative health impacts of alcohol, engaging in extensive public relations campaigns, and lobbying legislators to prevent stricter regulations on alcohol sales and marketing. By doing so, they aim to minimize regulations and maintain their market presence despite growing health concerns. ???Public Awareness:?It’s crucial for consumers to be aware of these risks and make informed decisions about their alcohol consumption. Enhanced early detection tools and transparent information are necessary. #Health #PublicPolicy #AlcoholAwareness #PublicHealth https://lnkd.in/g9h2ccaF

"Alcohol permeates people’s everyday lives, appearing everywhere from joyous celebrations to moments of grief, thus obscuring its possible dangers." Thank you Cara Poland, MD, MEd, FACP, DFASAM for illuminating how far too many people die from alcohol-related causes, one of the leading preventable fatalities in the world. Excessive drinking is responsible for?nearly 500 U.S. deaths?every day, whether from car accidents, liver disease, or dozens of other risks. We need empathetic care teams and solutions to pave better way forward for #AUD patients. #AlcoholAwareness #CompassionateSupport https://lnkd.in/g-82UcCS
Alcohol-related deaths are spiking. So why don’t we take alcohol addiction more seriously?

I had an incredible experience this past week at Aspen Ideas Health, surrounded by the other inspiring health fellows. Listening to leaders like Dr. Vivek Murthy and Dr. Francis Collins was truly enlightening. Dr. Murthy's discussion on the loneliness epidemic and Dr. Collins's insights on treatment pathways for liver disease deeply resonate with our focus areas at Ethos. One of the most valuable lessons I learned at the festival is the importance of staying present to build meaningful connections. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn from such esteemed leaders and fellow health advocates. Their inspiration will undoubtedly shape the future of our work at Ethos. The quest to extend human lifespan and enhance the quality of our years has never been more in demand from patients and consumers. As providers consider what this new paradigm shift will mean in healthcare, there often is one missing "vital sign" that gets brushed under the rug: alcohol consumption. In this week's edition, we have Hillary Lin, MD, practicing physician and serial entrepreneur with a background in neuroscience, oncology, and primary care. Dr. Lin co-founded Curio, a VC-backed startup that evolved from tech-enabled psychedelic-assisted therapy to an AI-enabled patient navigation platform. Currently, she is developing Livora Health, a new longevity health company. Dr. Lin shares her insights on how cross-specialty collaboration can enhance the effectiveness of longevity interventions by providing a more holistic approach to patient care.?Read more below + subscribe for more weekly insights in #behavioralhealth and #addictionmedicine. #LongevityMedicine #LifespanExtension #QualityOfLife #HealthcareInnovation #AlcoholConsumption #VitalSigns #PatientCare #HolisticHealth #CrossSpecialtyCollaboration #BehavioralHealth #AddictionMedicine #HealthcareRevolution #MedicalBreakthroughs #HealthTech #LongevityScience #PreventiveCare #HealthInsights

???Challenges in Treating Alcohol-Related Liver Disease (ALD): A recent NYT article highlights the complexity of treating alcohol-related liver disease (ALD) and here are our main takeaways: ???Stages: ALD progresses from fatty liver to hepatitis to cirrhosis, often without early symptoms. ???Diagnosis & Treatment: Diagnosis requires medical tests, and treatment necessitates complete abstinence from alcohol. Severe cases may need a liver transplant. ???Addressing Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD): Effective treatment of ALD is challenging without addressing underlying AUD. Abstinence is crucial but difficult to achieve without tackling the addiction itself. Ethos is dedicated to helping healthcare providers screen for risk factors associated with alcohol-related liver disease (ALD) to enable early intervention and prevent disease progression. By implementing comprehensive screening protocols and education, providers can identify high-risk individuals early, offering timely and effective treatment options. https://lnkd.in/eWFWyrEg #Health #LiverDisease #AlcoholAwareness #AddictionTreatment

Couldn't be more excited to be working alongside Kavita Rai and Bharat Rai as an advisor to Ethos. We need more smart people working on expanding access to care for Americans with alcohol use disorder, and the Ethos model of using connected technology to bring actionable data points to clinicians while engaging patients outside the 4 walls of the clinic gives patients a great tool to achieving and maintaining sobriety!

???Addressing the Rising Costs of Alcohol-Associated Liver Disease A recent study led by Jagpreet (Jag) Chhatwal, Director of MGH Institute for Technology Assessment, projects that the annual cost of treating alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) will soar from $31 billion in 2022 to $66 billion by 2040. The study underscores the urgent need for effective intervention programs and policy-level actions to combat the escalating health and economic burden of ALD. With high-risk drinking on the rise, especially among women and young people, it's imperative to invest in multipronged prevention and treatment strategies.
