Breathe in, breathe out, and watch your eyes follow the rhythm! A recent study by Schaefer and colleagues systematically explored how breathing influences pupil size dynamics—a topic that has been debated for years. Through five experiments that varied tasks, lighting, fixation distance, and brain region involvement (with and without an olfactory bulb), data revealed a consistent pattern wherein pupils were smallest at inhalation onset and largest during exhalation. The observed consistency across experimental conditions indicates a robust, brainstem-controlled mechanism, which the authors named the pupillary respiratory-phase response. https://lnkd.in/ge_TAHfQ #healthcarehighlight
