Inspired by the Ethereum Merge, a group of technology companies—aligned around the mission of accelerating decarbonization and scaling climate action—is launching the Ethereum Climate Platform (ECP). Pooling the best of Web3 and digital technologies, the ECP is engaging the Ethereum community and beyond to accelerate climate finance at scale. ECP achieves this by deploying the best-in-class technology and funding the development of digital environmental assets that will mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and deliver positive environmental and social impact for years to come. The platform is also committed to redressing and counteracting the historical Ethereum-based carbon footprint, dating back to the network’s launch in 2015, and accelerating the ECP launch partners' own decarbonization strategies. The initiative was founded by Consensys and climate tech firm Allinfra and its launch partners include: AAVE, Celo, ERM, Filecoin Green, Laser Digital (Nomura), Microsoft, NEAR Foundation, Polygon, Solid World, Toucan, UPC Capital Ventures, and W3bcloud. ECP and its launch partners are grateful for the following individuals and organizations who are providing invaluable advice, connections, and support to the initiative: GitCoin, Gold Standard, Climate Collective, Global Covenant of Mayors, IETA, Code Green, GBBC, Enterprise Ethereum Alliance, UN WFP Innovation Accelerator, Michael Sheren, Satya Tripathi, Michael Brune, Chris Larsen, Ingo Puhl, Gregor Robertson, and Lex Sokolin.

What are the key features of the Ethereum Climate Platform? ?? ECP leverages emerging technologies to accelerate the digitization of climate and mitigation outcomes. It uses cutting-edge digital Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (dMRV) solutions to enhance trust and transparency, in addition to a market-leading risk-assessment framework for project delivery. Together with many of the leading players in the emerging blockchain and climate space, ECP is pooling "best of" technologies to scale climate investments by streamlining climate mitigation investments and asset management across renewable energies, carbon reductions and removals, and other climate positive real-world-assets (RWA). The platform offers a more efficient path to carbon credit retiring and delivery of carbon assets to investors with high visibility and predictability. Built to facilitate enterprise onboarding and with strong institutional user features, ECP is the platform of choice for large-scale, high-integrity carbon investments. #carbon #carboncredits #climatefinance

Why is ECP so excited about blockchain for climate action? ?? At its core, blockchain provides an immutable, transparent, and secure ledger—essential for accurate tracking and verification of environmental data and transactions. So, for climate action, this can mean things like enhanced trust between parties, stronger accountability around climate pledges, more efficient carbon credit markets run on digital infrastructure, faster and more affordable project financing, and the transparent verification of environmental impact—be it from renewable energy, carbon reduction, or removals projects. The decentralized nature of blockchain also democratizes participation, enabling a broad range of stakeholders—from individual activists to large corporations—to directly engage in climate action in a transparent and verifiable manner. Through our experience in both financial services, environmental asset management, and blockchain, ECP has created a comprehensive platform that facilitates investment in climate-positive projects using a combination of the latest technologies. We need data and new technologies to be applied towards climate goals urgently. That’s why, to help accelerate the pace, we are pooling technology, networks, and expertise from over 20 partners and advisors to launch an effort to scale decarbonization across multiple industries and regions. Stay tuned to learn more! #web3 #blockchain #climateaction

What inspired the creation of the Ethereum Climate Platform (ECP)? ?? In 2022, a huge milestone in mitigating CO2 at scale happened: The Merge. This was a major software upgrade that changed the Ethereum platform's consensus mechanism from a proof-of-work protocol to a proof-of-stake system, reducing its energy consumption by about 99.95%. This major decarbonization event reinforced the potential of blockchain to support the acceleration of progress towards global climate goals. It also inspired a group of leading technology providers and ecosystem players from the wider Ethereum community to launch ECP—a blockchain-enabled, state-of-the-art technology platform and financing vehicle. The vision for this project is that it will accelerate capital into climate-aligned assets and drive decarbonization outcomes at scale. Measurement and reporting is central to any credible climate strategy. But understanding and monitoring the carbon footprint of distributed ledger technologies is complicated. That's why ECP was excited to see Alexander Neumüller—research lead for digital assets climate impact at the University of Cambridge—develop a state-of-the-art methodology for assessing Ethereum's climate footprint, building on their pioneering methodology for Bitcoin energy consumption. ? Prof. Neumueller published a study in December 2023 that is among the most thorough examinations of Ethereum's carbon footprint, using novel approaches to determine the energy footprint of mining nodes. It found that Ethereum's greenhouse gas emissions totalled 27.5 million tonnes carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO2e)—the equivalent to the yearly emissions of Honduras. We are motivated to continue making progress on our mission, and hope this will inspire more organizations to leverage their technologies and ecosystems/users to go beyond decarbonization and individual climate pledges, and pool their ambitions and solutions. #web3 #ethereum #carbonmitigation
