Energy island are a necessary step in the development of the future power system. yet, they are not business as usual and we should not treat them as such. These first steps towards an offshore HVDC grid require significant R&D and forward thinking decision making. Today a roadmap for energy islands was presented at the Eu parliament. Thank you for the opportunity to discuss our experiences within the #directions project at Etch - Energy Transmission Competence Hub and from the DC technologies working group of the #setplan during that session. Energy islands are not business as usual, but that does not mean we should move forward with them.
More than 60 participants from 12 countries gathered at the European Parliament for the launch of the Energy Island Forum’s first roadmap, “MAKING ENERGY ISLANDS A SUCCESS.” This event marks a significant milestone in the journey toward developing Europe’s first energy islands. The roadmap outlines the critical steps to realize these islands by 2030 and lays the groundwork for long-term innovation leading up to 2050. The roadmap was presented by Energy Island Forum Chairman Professor Nicolaos A. Cutululis and co-hosted by MEPs Niels Fuglsang (Denmark) and Borys Budka (Poland), Chair of the ITRE Committee, who are championing this initiative to accelerate Europe’s green transition. It showcased the collaboration and determination required to make energy islands a cornerstone of Europe’s green transition. The roadmap was discussed and commented on by key figures including Joachim Balke, Head of Unit for Infrastructure and Regional Cooperation, DG Energy, European Commission; James Matthys-Donnadieu, Chief Officer Customers, Markets and System, Elia; Dirk Van Hertem, Professor, KU Leuven; Ulrik Stridb?k, Vice President, Head of Regulatory Affairs, ?rsted; and Hessel de Jong, COO, Copenhagen Energy Islands (CIP). Key take aways: - Niels Fuglsang emphasized that energy islands are central to the EU's priorities, contributing to the fight against climate change, enhancing security through energy independence, and boosting European competitiveness. - The panel highlighted the importance of completing the first energy islands by 2030 or shortly after. These initial projects will serve as stepping stones for future innovations in energy islands. To achieve this, we must address financial risks and find ways to finance the necessary grid infrastructure. - While we may face technological challenges and significant investments, the greater danger lies in inaction. Failing to combat climate change and allowing non-European countries to lead in technological advancements will leave us dependent on their achievements. ? A huge thanks to everyone who contributed to the development of this first roadmap: DTU Wind and Energy Systems, ?rsted, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, Vestas, Siemens Energy, Siemens Gamesa, Hitachi Energy, Green Power Denmark, Energinet, Bornholms Energi & Forsyning, Port of Roenne A/S, Bornholms Regionskommune, Offshore Center Bornholm, DI Energi and others. The list is still open for more contributors to join. Photocredit: Diego Ravier

Join us on December 10th in Antwerp for a deep dive into #EnergyTransition opportunities in the Nordics and the Baltic Sea, co-hosted by Sirris | Innovation forward and Agoria Energy technology Club. Your hosts: Pieter Jan Jordaens & Pieter-Jan "PJ" Provoost. Why the Nordics? ?? Expected 2x - 3x demand in #windenergy Ambitious offshore wind goals and a rapidly growing demand for wind assets—set to double for offshore and triple for onshore by 2050. This will require an impressive HVDC grid expansion. - Prof. Jan Mertens | Chief Science Officer at ENGIE - Prof. Dirk Van Hertem | KU Leuven & EnergyVille - Daniel Dahlblom | Lead Engineer HVDC at Hitachi Energy ?? Abundance in critical materials This region is abundant in critical raw materials, fosters a robust #battery ecosystem in its "Nordic Battery Belt," and leads in #greensteel production and emerging technologies like deep-sea mining for critical minerals. - Geoffrey Ejzenberg & No?l Jans | Founders at Behault Group - Kris Van Nijen | Managing Director at Global Sea Mineral Resources (GSR) ?? ?? ???? Supply chain security The proximity of resources enhances supply chain security, while strong alignment with EU sustainability goals and high R&D engagement create a favorable environment for investment. - Alexander McCabe | Energy Analyst at EIC - Yanaika Denoyelle | Climate Consultant at Econopolis - Patrick Van den Bossche?| Strategic Advisor?Green?Transition at Agoria More info & reserve your spot: https://lnkd.in/eM-d-yKr

?? Yesterday Etch hosted a collaborative meeting between Belgian mirror committees for CIGRE study committees B4 (DC systems) and B5 (protection and automation). In addition to mirror committee meetings, presentations and discussions were around the synergies between B4 and B5 work, and ways in which further collaboration would be useful in both the Belgian and international contexts. ?? Building on our deep insights into HVDC systems and protection will be essential when moving towards the converter dominated and cabled-based power systems of the future. Thanks for the coordination Geraint Chaffey, Philippe Goossens, Kenny De Kerf, Cédric Moors, Dirk Van Hertem and to all participants.
