The holidays can be overwhelming for children with ASD. Between the sights, sounds, and smells, it's easy for a child to become overwhelmed. Plan for success this Thanksgiving with these five tips for a sensory-friendly Thanksgiving: ?? Plan Ahead - Plan ahead by packing a safety bag with calming items, address any substitutes, and if needed, discuss an exit strategy. ?? Set Expectations - Use a picture schedule, written timeline, or a checklist to help your child adapt to a new routine. ?? Create a Safe Space - Plan a safe space for your loved one to take sensory breaks when needed. Dim the lights, reduce noise, and provide other specific comforts to help keep calm. ?? Sensory Awareness - Make sure your guests or hosts are aware of your child’s sensory needs. Schedule breaks in their safe space to prevent meltdowns! ?? Favorite Fall Backs - Make sure you have food that your child enjoys on the menu! For children with ASD, the sights and sounds of Black Friday can send them into sensory overload. So, how do you brighten up Black Friday for a child on the autism spectrum? Here are four tips to brighten Black Friday for children with ASD: ??? Bring a survival kit and plan ahead - You know your child better than anyone! Bring your child's favorite drinks, snacks, toys, and headphones for the big day. ??? Praise them - Is your child keeping their hands to themselves? Are they politely waiting in line? Tell them! Remember to give specific compliments, i.e. “I love the way that you are keeping your hands to yourself when we walk down the aisles.” ??? Plan for success - Avoid the crowds by going later in the day. If you can, choose a less-crowded store to avoid overwhelming your child. ???
