A big thank you to Clare Harris for the opportunity to talk about our latest story, "Linda Has a Busy Week." This story is close to our founder, Lauren Piovesan's heart, as it highlights her mother's story and her family's experience as migrants from Italy. We hope this story has been useful for all those wonderful teachers on our platform. If you've used this story, please comment and let us know how it went! We also hope that this inspires all teachers with a migrant/refugee background to write their stories. There are so many amazing and important stories to share!??

Writer of Australian EAL/ESL materials at The Book Next Door, now also creating dementia-friendly books. AMEP teacher in Western Australia for many years.

What might teachers-turned-authors bring to their EAL/ESL stories from their own migrant heritage? And what tips would they share with other would-be writers? In my latest interview with Lauren Piovesan from ESL Reads, we talked about how 'Linda Has a Busy Week' is her own mother's story – as well as the story of countless migrant learners who act as interpreters for the rest of the family... ?? Happy World Kindness Day! ?? Today, we want to celebrate the kindness teachers show their students day in and day out. We show kindness in the way that we care about our students, we commit to continual professional improvement to better meet their needs, and in the amazing levels of patience we have, even when students are pushing all our buttons! On this special day, we also hope teachers take a moment to be kind to themselves. Teaching is demanding, and the high standards you set for yourselves can make it hard to pause, rest, and recognise your efforts. Today, we hope you can allow yourself that kindness—you deserve it! At ESL Reads, our stories pay tribute to the glimpses of kindness our EAL students receive on their often challenging and complex journeys. In the spirit of World Kindness Day, we’re thrilled to share our digital story "Taw Meh Can Speak Level 1," which highlights a teacher's patience, kindness, and dedication to her EAL student in helping her find her voice —just like so many of you. ?? With increasing workloads and evolving classroom challenges, teachers face the demanding task of meeting every learner’s unique needs. And this is only getting more difficult and more complex! Differentiation is essential but can be time-intensive and requires careful planning. At ESL Reads, we make differentiation easier. Our stories are available in five literacy levels to support every student’s journey! In fact, most teachers using our service say this is the most useful feature of ESL Reads. “I start my students on Level 2 to build confidence, then guide them to Level 3 to expand their vocabulary,” shares Mary, a secondary EAL teacher from VIC.
