This past Friday, our very own Joe Sultan exhibited a selection of his sculptures at the Center for Architecture’s Art by Architects exhibition. The show highlights architects’ creative pursuits beyond their professional work, bringing together voices from across the field. Proceeds from artwork sales support the Center for Architecture’s design and education programs. . It is with great sadness that we honor the life and legacy of Carol Lamberg, a dear friend, visionary, and longtime collaborator of ESKW/Architects. Carol, the retired Executive Director of Settlement Housing Fund (SHF), passed away peacefully on January 20th. Carol dedicated her life to advancing equality and transforming communities through affordable housing and reform. Her visionary leadership at SHF from its inception in 1969, and as Executive Director from 1983 to 2014, resulted in countless developments that changed lives and neighborhoods across New York City. Her legacy includes landmark projects such as New Settlement Apartments and its state-of-the-art school and community center, Manhattan Plaza for performing artists, Two Bridges, Semi-Perm, and many more. We were privileged to collaborate with Carol on numerous impactful projects, including some of our early NYCHA developments in the Two Bridges area and on the celebrated New Settlement Community Campus. Our continued collaboration with SHF after her retirement has resulted in meaningful projects like 1561 Walton Avenue, Prospect Plaza Homes, Wythe Place, Weeksville Place, Melrose Concourse, and Coney Landing. Carol’s tireless work has touched the lives of thousands of New Yorkers, leaving a legacy that will resonate for generations to come. Landy Court enhances Downtown Yonkers by providing vital affordable and supportive housing options in a welcoming, community-focused environment. The project’s 80 units meet the needs of low-income households and individuals with mental health needs, offering stability and access to on-site social services. The thoughtful design respects the neighborhood’s industrial history, using red brick details to blend into the context while adding modern touches. Communal amenities like the rooftop garden, community room, and light-filled lobby foster connection among residents. The project’s integration into the hillside, along with challenges like retaining wall rehabilitation and utility relocations, demonstrates a commitment to thoughtful urban development. We’re pleased to announce that Landy Court will be awarded by AIA Westchester + Hudson Valley at the upcoming 2024 Design Awards & Holiday Celebration on November 15.? . Located in Downtown Yonkers, Landy Court is a new 7-story, 80-unit, 74,600 SF affordable and supportive housing project co-developed by Saint Joseph’s Medical Center, Concern Housing, and CSD Housing. Of the 80 units, 32 (studio, 1-bedroom, 2-bedroom) serve households earning at or below 60% AMI, while the remaining studio units are reserved for individuals referred through the Westchester County Department of Community Mental Health’s Single Point of Access program. Amenities include a community room with a kitchen, exercise room, library, laundry room, and a rooftop garden. The project also houses 2,200 SF of social services office space for Saint Joseph’s and 34 parking spaces. Since the building is on a hillside, the double-height lobby connects the street level to the upper rear terrace, creating a slice of glazing so that the lobby is always daylit. Glazed partitions at either side of the lobby transfer daylight to the adjacent common areas. The ground-floor lobby is the heart of the building, promoting visibility from the street into the building. A generous awning provides shelter on the sidewalk while maintaining the warehouse aesthetic original to the street. The interiors are inspired by the headquarters of a turn-of-the-century manufacturing company, with simple but rich finishes. .
