We’re honored to announce that the Baptist Community Ministries Headquarters has been recognized with a 2025 LOUISIANA LANDMARKS SOCIETY INC Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation! This project transformed a 1950s Hancock Whitney bank building into a modern office space while preserving its mid-century character. Thoughtful restoration of travertine-clad columns, terrazzo flooring, and wood paneling celebrates the building’s historic integrity, while contemporary updates foster functionality and community engagement. What if progress means returning to what we once knew—at scale? Last week at Facades+ DC, I joined Jack Becker (BLDUS), Katie MacDonald, Architect and Kyle Schumann (After Architecture) to discuss bio-based materials, low-carbon solutions, and how material choices shape our built environment. We design for the future, yet we still rely on materials that deplete resources, trap heat, and pollute our air. For centuries, architecture was shaped by place. In Louisiana, this meant using materials like bousillage, cypress, and barge board, which responded to both climate and culture. Today, we’re not just revisiting these ideas, but advancing them through mass timber, bio-based composites, and circular construction. The question is no longer whether these materials work; it’s how we scale them, root them in local economies, and generate the demand that drives meaningful change. I'm excited to share the public release of the fellowship products from EskewDumezRipple’s Just | Change Fellowship. The 2023-2024 research on climate and environmental justice in New Orleans and Washington, D.C.—initiated in collaboration with Elisa Sofia Casta?eda—revealed how traditional design practices can overlook both the obvious and subtle challenges faced by communities on the frontlines of climate change. By engaging directly with local stakeholders, we uncovered how these communities craft innovative, authentic solutions in response to their unique challenges. With federal equity resources at risk, it’s more urgent than ever to preserve public environmental data and rapidly generate equity-based site assessments. Supported by the Public Environmental Data Partners, the following tools offer a way to turn equity issues into design opportunities. EQUITY Guide: This resource provides designers with a framework for evaluating project sites. It organizes research and insights into six key equity categories, combining quantitative and qualitative data to support informed, equitable design decisions. "Mapping Equity" Resource Book: This resource is a comprehensive compilation of community interviews, spatial mapping, and case studies that document real-world solutions developed by marginalized communities. It delivers actionable insights that can be directly integrated into design and planning processes. Aligned with the principles of The American Institute of Architects (AIA)'s Framework for Equitable Communities (https://lnkd.in/eF2zaJqP), the Just | Change Fellowship resources empower architects, planners, and policymakers to transform design from merely functional to truly transformative.
