Our mission is to empower an inclusive and diverse community to accelerate continental-scale environmental data science
关于我们
The Environmental Data Science Innovation & Inclusion Lab (ESIIL) is a NSF-funded data synthesis center led by the University of Colorado Boulder in collaboration with NSF’s CyVerse at the University of Arizona and the University of Oslo. ESIIL enables a global community of environmental data scientists to leverage the wealth of environmental data and emerging analytics to develop science-based solutions to solve pressing challenges in biology and other environmental sciences. ESIIL holds inclusion as a core principle and method for diversifying environmental data science at a time when society needs all perspectives, and science needs to serve all. ESIIL’s research community generates discoveries and novel approaches through: 1) cutting-edge team science, 2) innovative tools and collaborative cyberinfrastructure, 3) data science education and training, and 4) building inclusive participation and diverse groups. These activities advance the frontier of environmental data science, a rapidly evolving discipline bridging the computational, biological, environmental, and social sciences.

Excited to share my incredible journey with the ESIIL Data Short Course 2024! Over the past 4 weeks, I had the privilege to be part of the inaugural cohort of the ESIIL (Environmental Data Science Innovation and Inclusion Lab) Data Short Course, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). This course, a collaboration between the University of Colorado Boulder, NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, and Earth Lab CU Boulder, has been nothing short of transformative. EXPANDING MY HORIZONS IN EARTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL DATA SCIENCE From mastering GitHub and Markdown in the first week, to diving deep into open and reproducible science and time-series data in the second week, each module stretched my mind and equipped me with invaluable skills. Week three brought a deep dive into spatial data fundamentals, culminating in the final week where we applied our knowledge in practical projects. ?? SKILLS AND PROJECTS ACQUIRED: - GitHub & Markdown: Created a professional portfolio using GitHub pages. - Open Science & Time-Series Data: Completed a NOAA NCEI climate data workflow. - Spatial Data: Developed a culturally relevant map using GeoPandas and rioxarray. - Applications: Created a lesson module for University of Benin Students demonstrating the application of these skills in teaching and research. These projects not only honed my technical abilities but also illustrated the powerful intersection of data science and environmental research. My portfolio and project links can be found on my GitHub page: [https://lnkd.in/dR4vCs9i]. ?KEY TAKEAWAYS: - The importance of open and reproducible science. - Practical experience with Python libraries like pandas, holoviews, GeoPandas, and rioxarray. - Developing and applying spatial data analysis skills. - Engaging in project-based learning that promotes diversity and capacity building in Earth and Environmental Data Science. I’m incredibly grateful to the ESIIL (Environmental Data Science Innovation and Inclusion Lab) team, especially Nathan Anderson Quarderer and Elsa Culler, for their guidance and support throughout this journey. This experience has not only broadened my knowledge but also opened up new possibilities in my research and teaching endeavors. I’m excited to continue exploring and applying these skills to answer relevant GIS and Earth/Environmental science questions and contribute to diversifying the EDS workforce. Here’s to continuous learning and innovation in the field of Earth and Environmental Data Science! #EnvironmentalDataScience #GIS #OpenScience #DataScience #ESIIL #EarthLab #NOAA #CIRES #NSF #ContinuousLearning #Innovation

Last week, we were delighted to host attendees from the 2024 ESIIL (Environmental Data Science Innovation and Inclusion Lab) Innovation Summit and CO-WY Partners for a special happy hour. ESIIL's 2024 Innovation Summit: ?? The summit used big data to enhance resilience across ecosystems and societies, focusing on ecological forecasting and climate solutions. Over two and a half days, participants engaged in open science approaches, including AI and cloud computing, to co-develop resilience strategies. CO-WY Engine Partnership: ?? ESIIL partnered with the Colorado-Wyoming Climate Resilience Engine to drive innovation and economic growth in the region. Together, they developed initiatives to increase climate resilience, supporting local communities, governments, and industries in tackling climate change. Alan Rudolph Bryn Rees Jennifer Balch
