Closing out #BlackHistoryMonth with one of our favorite NC innovators . . . “I had this illusion that with a degree and a stethoscope around my neck, I could finally solve all the issues that had plagued my family and my community for years,” Nehemiah Stewart, MD-PhD candidate at the UNC School of Medicine told Eshelman Innovation Executive Director John Bamforth PhD during an early installment of the video series “North Carolina Innovators You Should Know.” The realization that a medical degree might not be enough influenced Stewart’s latest startup company, MASLOW HEALTH. The future of higher education is being shaped by critical workforce and technology shifts. A recent Harvard Business Review article on the Future of Work in 2025 highlights major trends. Eshelman Innovation's Chief Strategy Officer, Roy Zwahlen, called out his top 3 trends for #HigherEd: ?? Loss of Expertise – With over a third of faculty aged 55+ and retirements accelerating, institutions risk losing critical knowledge. AI can help, but it won’t replace human expertise. ?? Enrollment Declines & AI Adoption – Population shifts will drive universities to explore AI for cost efficiencies. Yet, regulatory and political hurdles will likely slow adoption compared to other industries. ?? Belonging & Collaboration – As concerns about loneliness and workplace collaboration grow, universities are shifting focus from DEI to fostering a sense of belonging. The challenge: balancing evolving demographics and national uncertainty. Great article by the Gartner team: Emily Rose McRae, Peter Aykens, Kaelyn Lowmaster, and Jonah Shepp #FutureOfWork #Innovation #ThoughtLeadership

Great HBR Future of Work 2025 Trends Article.?Inspired by these factors, here are my top 3 trends for Higher Ed: 1. Loss of Expertise:?Significant expertise will be lost as faculty and staff retire in large waves. Factors such as the Trump administration's pullback on science funding, enrollment cliffs, and other disruptions may accelerate this trend. Currently, 37% of faculty members are aged 55 or older, compared to 23% of the general working population. Over half of all staff at colleges and universities are aged 45 and older. While AI can replace some of this talent, it cannot cover all losses. 2. Decreased Enrollments and AI Adoption:?Population declines will pressure universities to adopt AI for cost savings. However, increased political scrutiny and a tightening regulatory environment will limit AI adoption. Expect slower adoption rates even compared to other regulated industries like healthcare. 3. Fight Against Loneliness and Collaboration:?Universities react to Trump administration pressure shifting away from 'DEI' to 'belonging' to combat increases in loneliness highlighted by the Surgeon General and respond to decreased co-worker collaboration highlighted in Gartner's research. 'Nudgetech' might help, but evolving demographics and national instability will likely exacerbate these concerns based on research in this space that demonstrates increased segregation and decreased collaboration in times of uncertainty. Great thoughts on original article by Gartner team Emily Rose McRae, Peter Aykens, Kaelyn Lowmaster, Jonah Shepp

Breaking Barriers, Building Solutions ?? How Innovation is Changing the Future of Food Access Eshelman Innovation’s PowerUp initiative is tackling food insecurity in Black communities by fostering entrepreneurship and innovation. Partnering with North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, the nation’s largest HBCU, PowerUp is supporting changemakers like Ashlie Thomas, a gardener, advocate, and tech entrepreneur, who is developing Terralink—an AI-driven platform bridging food production and nutrition education. "I want to see people have access to the foods they need, not just to survive but to thrive," Thomas shares. Blueline had the honor of bringing this initiative to life through a documentary-style video that reflects Eshelman Innovation’s mission-driven approach. This project is part of a larger series showcasing entrepreneurial solutions for public health—from food insecurity to vaccines, oncology, and addiction treatment. Access to healthy food is more than a necessity—it’s a foundation for stronger communities, better health, and greater opportunities. As PowerUp is being featured this month in recognition of Black History Month, we’re honored to have played a role in amplifying these voices and highlighting the solutions emerging from historically underrepresented communities. Stories have the power to shift perspectives and drive meaningful change. If you have a story to tell, we’d love to help bring it to life.
