Every business is imperfect, so you never get a perfect setup for data and AI products. Working in this field for 13 years has taught me 3 things about what it takes to succeed with AI: 1?? Most great data and AI products began as bad or mediocre data and AI products. AI product managers must have frameworks for incremental delivery, feedback, and iterative improvement that fit the data and AI product paradigm. 2?? You can’t wait for a good setup before you start, or you’ll never start. Those frameworks must succeed when data and #AI products need to go from bad or mediocre to great. 3?? Businesses should track the leading indicators of their product cycles, but most only respond to lagging data points. AI product strategy must work when the business is playing from behind or out of position. The highest-paid data and AI product managers get brought in to turn failure into success. Yesterday, I taught a class on AI product turnarounds. I have used Apple’s Vision Pro, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, and Microsoft Copilot as case studies since early last year. None are outright failures. However, all three need a turnaround executed in months, not years. That’s the challenge I gave my current AI #ProductManagement cohort. Apple can’t afford to forklift out the bad and start from scratch or wait for a complete redesign. It needs an incremental product or feature, and combining VR, #data, and AI provides several options. The Vision Pro needs a key partner like Disney+ to deliver new entertainment experiences that make watching Star Wars or Secret Wars on the VR platform better than watching it on another screen. Disney+ needs a competitive advantage against Netflix. You have an imperfect platform, 1 year or less before leadership pulls the plug, and 1 shot to right the ship. Anything you propose faces an uphill climb. What do you do?

In business, leadership, and even personal growth, here’s what separates those who thrive from those who stagnate: ? They actively seek opposing viewpoints to challenge their thinking. ? They embrace "perspective flipping"—zooming in, zooming out, and seeing beyond the obvious. ? They ask: “Am I reacting to reality, or just my perception of it?” ? They understand that emotional intelligence is about seeing situations through others' eyes, not just their own. ? They develop intellectual humility—the courage to say, "Maybe I’m wrong," and the wisdom to explore new angles. ?? Here’s a challenge for you: The next time you face a disagreement, a tough decision, or even a personal setback—pause. Ask yourself: ?? Am I seeing the full picture, or just my version of it? ??
